Hello everyone! First off I'd like to say this is the first ever forum I joined. I'm usually the one who just hopes someone asks the question I'm thinking about :D.

Aaaaanyways! I'm planning to get my first smartphone. Definitely getting an android, and Captivate is at the top of my list. So I'm from Malaysia and the Captivate we're getting(in Malaysia) is same to that from the US. From AT&T. My first question is, are any applications restricted to or from Captivate because it is from AT&T?

I have also read alot of threads and most agrees that Captivate is an excellent phone other than GPS issues. So when I get my Captivate, what should I do and what should I avoid (apps and stuff).

Abit long winded I know. Hope you android veterans can point me in the right direction! :D

Well I would start by getting lookout which will protect you from virueses, malware, spyware and other threaats. This will keep your phone safe from pretty much anything. Then I would Beautiful Widgets which adds a really nice look to the phone.

AT&T has crippled the ability to download apps ttom a third party source directly from the phone. I believe in malaysia you guys might be running 2.2. GPS was a problem but for me the GPSRestore app has fixed me problem. My gps works about 99% of the time. Launcher pro is one app u must get in order to customize your phone. Goodluck!

Forgive the question. But what are 3rd party apps ? Also, I heard from some people that we can't download apps from the market on our pc and we have to access via our mobile. Any truth to that?

So being unable to download 3rd party apps, would I be at a large disadvantage? Are there any notable apps that I would not be able to obtain? I have also read that some Captivate users not being able to get certain games (angry birds). Is it their fault or..?

Also, is sideloading a good idea?

Cheers :)

Also, with free games there are a lot of advertisements. So if I don't have an online connection (3g or wifi), does that mean I can't play those games?

its not a large disadvantage, nearly all games are in the market including angry birds. there are a few apps only available by sideloading but i only have 1 or 2 and they both have to do with a custom rom and those all have sideloading enabled. also you can use sideload wonder machine if you did need to sideload

you also dont have to have a connection to play games with adds, i dont really know what happens but im sure you dont need a connection

You will have ads on apps even if you don't have a connection.
Here is some information on sideloading.

And for angry birds here is a link. You will have to download it to the computer and copy it over to the folder for your captivate.

Did this help?

The accuracy of this is questionable.

I'd like to see some evidence that Lookout actually protects you from any actual, real existing threats and does anything more than just use up memory and CPU cycles. Considering there have been all of what.. 3?... trojans ever seen on Android, and these were isolated cases found only in remote corners and certainly not widespread in the wild.
