Root Need some help figuring out whats going on with my Evo

Riptides

Lurker
A few days ago I bought an activated a used Evo to tide me over until the SGS2 comes out. I was hoping it would have froyo on it so I could root but no such luck. I had heard that there wasn't a root for gingerbread so I thought I was SOL.

But then I read somewhere that its possible for some phones to be downgraded if they had been rooted in the past or had an older version of Hboot. I searched for a way to check the Hboot version but the method of powering on the phone while holding down the Vol Down key is not working for me. It just turns out like it normally would even though I'm holding down the Vol Down button the whole time.

Here are the current numbers in the software info section
Android
2.33
Baseband
2.15.00.05.02
Kernel
2.6.35.10-g4e39384
Build
4.22.651.2 CL60865 release-keys
Software
4.22.651.2
PRI
2.15_003

Additionally this morning the phone came up with the following message:

"A system upgrade for 2.3 (Gingerbread) is available that provides minor enhancements. Please download and install the following update. System Upgrade 4.24.651.1 (6.07MG)
-FOTA Update"

I declined the update.

If someone could provide me with some guidance that would be great. I've been trying to find another way of determining my Hboot version for the past hour with no luck. I have a feeling I can't root and should just take the above update to fix some bugs, but I want to be sure.

Go under settings, choose power settings and unchecked fastboot. Then hold volume down and power. Post what it says there.

nope you cant downgrade with s-on. sorry man you will have to wait like everybody else. there is a thread currently running in the xda development section (i'm not gonna post the link cause it is totally bogus) where one guy was able to downgrade and root at the same time. he flashed a ruu of 3.70 and it somehow magically rooted, unlocked nand and downgraded his phone. i do not believe his story one bit. he might have gotten a phone that was already had s-off but did not know it. and whatever you do please do not try this. it could boink your phone. just be patient.

Yeah I'll just wait, looks like it'll be soon anyway.
So I should be fine doing that other OTA update right?

even though i believe that the maintenance update does not touch the bootloader, i would wait at least until an exploit is found. you never know what the rooting process could be. but if you can't wait go ahead and do it. i believe that either way we will have root soon. so i will leave that up to you.
