Root Need Some Help Using Safe Strap And Flashing A ROM

CoyotesFan4Evr

I don't know what is going on honestly. I went to rootzwiki and checked up on all the ROM's for the Bionic on ICS. I found one I want to try but had to join droidrzr.com in order to get it. I did that but I haven't gotten the validation e-mail yet. I can't post or comment or even get in touch with a moderator or admin over there. So I'm here asking how the heck do I flash a rom using safestrap? It doesn't give me an option to do so, at least not one that is touchable. So what am I missing here? I read everything that I'm suppose to and I even read EXTRA just to make sure I don't miss anything. I've learned to be really detailed when it comes to reading things and messing with my phone.

I'm guessing I'm going to get the question as to which ROM I am trying to flash as there might be some slight differences in flash methods. Anyways, the ROM is the WIZZED BEAN. I appreciate the help in advance, you guys are always the fastest to respond and have never steered me wrong.

Which version of Safestrap do you have?

If it is 1.x or 2.x, there is nothing touchable about Safestrap - you use the volume up and down keys to move in the menu and the power button to select the currently highlighted menu option.

Once you get a ROM to install, the basic function of Safestrap 1 or 2 is:

- it is a good practice to go into the Backup/Restore menu and backup the ROM. You can choose to store the backup in internal storage or the "external" SD card. (Backups are stored in a folder /safestrap/backup). Backups can be restored later so that you can bring the phone back exactly as it was when you first ran the backup, like Norton Ghost for a PC - so, you can try a new ROM, and go back to what you were running in minutes if you don't like it, with all of your data and apps intact.

- the first time that you are ready to install a ROM, go to the Safe boot menu and Toggle safe mode on. Safe mode protects the stock system partition and uses an unused Linux partition on the phone to store the system partition for the ROM that you are using, which makes is particularly easy to go back to stock if you want to (that's what makes it safe.) After that, use the menu option to go back to the main menu

- Wipe data/factory reset. This should be obvious, but it clears the /data and /cache partitions so that when you restart the phone it will be as if you are starting for the first time. You will almost always do this - different ROMs may store data in different ways, and you may get force close errors if you flash a new ROM without wiping data first

- Many people will tell you to Wipe Dalvik cache as well. If you have done a Wipe data/factory reset, this is unnecessary - wipe data/factory reset also wipes the Dalvin cache.

- Choose "install zip from sd card". Navigate to the location on "external" sd card or internal storage where you placed the ROM's zip file and select it.

- When the zip is installed, restart the phone.

If you have Safestrap 3.0x, it should be completely touchable. The current Safestrap web site has a "how to": How-To Safestrap (Updated for v3.04)

Thanks Doogald, I actually searched youtube for a video on how to flash the actual rom that I wanted to flash. Thank you for your help though. It took some figuring out on my own with how to activate the rom slot. I'm going to need to get a bigger sd card because after I flashed back to stock rooted I kept getting told that I had no space. So yeah a 4 or 8 gig sd card isn't cutting it. I think it's 8 actually. Anyways, I know xda responds fast but I just didn't ask because everything has been moved to rootzwiki rom wise with links to the thread that they are posted on which took me to droidrazr.com and that's where my problem has lied since. Again thanks!

Sometimes the video how-to's are the best for non-experts like me. Sounds like you've got it figured out, but if it helps my authentication email from droidrazr.com went straight to my gmail spam folder.

Ok, so you have Safestrap 3.

However, an external SD card is not going to help you much with Safestrap 3. Safestrap 3 uses the internal storage (sometimes referred to as the internal SD card) - in other words, the 12 GB or so of storage built internally to the phone.

What you can do with an external card is to move as many things as can be stored there to an external SD card - move the photos and videos in the DCIM folder; move the actual ROM .zip files there as well. Some apps, unfortunately, so not allow you to store anywhere but /sdcard (which is the internal storage area - the external card is /sdcard-ext).

But, you are on the right track. Start up Safestrap. Go to the Boot option, and create a ROM slot. I have 2 slots myself on my Droid 3, because that's all that I need, and I used a data partition of 2 GB. If you don't use a lot of apps, you may be able to get by with a data partition of 1 GB. (I also set a nickname to identify which slot has which ROM, but that really isn't all that important for two ROM slots.)

Then, activate that ROM slot. Wipe data/factory reset. Install a ROM zip file, which will install into the currently active ROM slot (the one that is activated from the Boot menu.) You need to slide a control at the bottom to confirm the install of a zip file.

It's a pretty slick system - though it should be pointed out that Safestrap 3.05 is still considered beta. Last night I had some trouble activating Safestrap from its boot menu - pressing menu started the phone normally several times in a row. That may be more a Droid 3 thing than a Bionic thing, though, so I wouldn't worry to much about it, and it's great to be able to switch between two working ROMs in a matter of a couple of minutes. Also, Safestrap 3.05 allows the battery to charge while plugged in, which previous Safestrap versions did not allow - I believe that the battery drained whenever Safestrap ran, even if the phone was plugged in.

So here's a question for you. I didn't do a wipe data or FDR when I made the new slot. I didn't do it to either my factory ICS or the slot that I put the rom into. It didn't seem to affect anything other than telling me that I was out of space. So my thing is,is what am I wiping if I do wipe what I'm suppose to? I mean if it's in a new slot that I've never used before honestly what is it wiping? For now I'm back on ICS stock rooted. I only have one real problem with Wizzed Bean and that's the greyed out signal bars. I like them blue. I could very well flash a different rom later on but for now I'll just play with being rooted until I get a bigger SD card. Thanks for the info, I will move stuff over once I get the bigger card.

This is off topic but it is my thread so I guess I can ask this question if I want right? Anyways, does anyone here know any of the mods or person(s) in charge over on the DroidRzr.com site? In case anyone doesn't know there are several different sections over there separated for each motorola android phone to include the bionic. If anyone does know someone of power over there would they please have them check for my confirmation e-mail because I've requested it to be resent several times in the past couple days and I haven't gotten it yet. It's the same name that I use here. I've decided to keep the same username on all the android sites that I join to keep it simple and easier to talk to anyone that I meet here or there that are on multiple sites like I am at times. A big thanks to whoever could contact someone over there because they don't have an option that I can use to contact them myself even if I'm not logged in. It's like a secret society over there trying to talk to a mod or something. LOL

I agree that it's probably not necessary to wipe data on a new slot. For an existing slot, then it depends - if it's a new ROM from another developer, definitely yes. If it's an upgrade from a ROM that you are already running on the slot, then it depends on whether the developer says it's ok to install over an existing build without wiping - the dev will say. In that case, though, I would wipe Dalvik cache.

Wiping data on the stock slot is exactly the same as doing a factory data reset.

I've been checking there multiple times a day and night. I've got nothing. Something makes me think I hit a wrong key when doing my e-mail for the registration because I requested my password and used the e-mail address that I would use for that site and it didn't come back with anything. So I might just have to create a whole new thing since I can't even e-mail one of the mods or admins on there.
