Root Need some Serious help

OK. So for some time now, I've been running MIUI Rom, probably a few updates old. But it's been very stable and I've not bothered to update.

I noticed my SD card is nearly full, so, instead of trying to find out why it was full, I decided I wanted to load another ROM and start from fresh with a clean SD card (I was going to wipe it).

I couldn't boot into recovery from ROM Manager. Kept taking me to the HBOOT screen and that's it. So...because I'm uber impatient and way past bedtime, I just reformatted my SD card. Still can't get into recovery, and when I DL ROM Mgr from market (previous version on phone kept throwing FC), it says "this is just a key".

So...to make a long story short, I feel like I've stepped into it and need to find a way out. I want to, first, get back to the unrooted Froyo and start from scratch...unless someone knows a way to get me into recovery faster. I'm kinda frozen, not wanting to do anything else for fear of taking my phone beyond the point of no return.

I've got "Evervolv" waiting on my laptop ready to go, but I can't get into the damn recovery.

Help!!

when I DL ROM Mgr from market (previous version on phone kept throwing FC), it says "this is just a key".

thats because it is,just a key. you are only downloading the paid pro key. you need to also download the free version to get it to work. the paid pro key unlocks options in the free version. so you need them both. see?? :p

i imagine that once you download the free version that it will work and you will be able to flash a recovery and boot into it.

i personally use RA_GNM(the alternate) unless it wont install a rom. wich ever your preference is,try the other if the first one you try doesnt work.

failing that,if you rooted with unrevoked and have the S-OFF bootloader, then you can install a verison of clockwork,or RA-GNM via hboot. from there youll be able to backup, wipe, and flash a new rom.

i personally see no reason whatsoever to "unroot and go back to 2.2 to start from scratch". rooted is rooted, its not going to be any different the 2nd time. youll be able to wipe the slate clean by simply doing wipes in recovery.

if you end up needing to flash recovery via hboot they are available here: http://dougpiston.com/?page_id=85

edit: one more thing that you can try if installing recovery viA hboot scares you: once you have a functioning rom manager,if you are getting an "error installing recovery" type message when you try to flash it,i had that some prollem once. what worked for me was opening the clockworkmod folder, and deleting the "settings" and "downloads" folders that were within it. i plugged my phone in and deleted them with my pc,but you could also delete them on the phone with astro or your file manager of choice :) something in one of the folders was causing some sort of conflict and deleteing them allowed rom manager to start with a clean slate of sorts. just make sure you dont delete the "backups" folder

I downloaded the free version of ROM. I saw the paid version but picked the free one. DLoaded it and same message.

Yikes...

So I removed the ROM Manager from my phone...but it seems to always DL the premium key even though I choose the free version in the app market.

after it DLs it does a quick reboot and the premium key is on my phone.

Now, I am trying to reboot and it's hung up on the white htc incredible screen!!

Maybe this needs to be moved to the all things root instead of the ROM subsection...but I need help!

So assuming you've given it enuff time to reboot that we know for sure its hung:

Pull the battery. Power on while holding volume down. This should take you to the white hboot screen. Take note of the numbers that you see,and weather you are S-Off or S-ON.

Use volume and power buttons to select recovery.after a moment at the HTC screen You should go to a black screen with orange letters if you have clockwork 3.0.0.x . Different colored letters if you have something else.

What happens when you do the above?

HBOOT-0.92.0000
Radio-2.15.00.07.28
S-OFF

I hit Recovery and I get to FASTBOOT with options: BOOTLOADER, REBOOT, REBOOT BOOTLOADER, POWER DOWN

Sounds like you do not have a custom recovery installed. You will need to go to Doug pistons site that i linked above and download a recovery. Since you can't get into a functioning rom, remove your SD card and plug it into your PC via an adapter to transfer the file. Make sure your card is formatted FAT32 and rename the file as directed. Now boot into hboot again and the phone will find the file and ask if you want to update.

Once its finished you can boot to recovery and restore a backup or flash a new rom. Sorry I can't be more specific right now,I'm at work. Ill try and answer other questions if you have them, but I can only check every so often.

scotty...i was able to put the new recovery on the SD card via an old BB Storm I had, but now my Inc won't even power up at all.

Oh...and the amber charging indicator is slowing blinking.

It may be that the battery is dead... so plugging in for awhile may fix.

Other than that...did you accidentally hold volume Up instead of down? If so,pull the battery and try again. Make sure to hold volume down while powering on

battery was dead. sorry. i downloaded a recovery from the site you recommended...put it on SD card, but still HBOOT error. Is there a specific folder to put that new PB31IMG zip into?

No... goes on root level. Don't unzip it. Make sure card is FAT32. Make sure file is named correctly. Maybe battery is to low. Let it charge and try again

How do I know what clockworkmod version I have without being able to boot the device? He lists a file for each version.

And root directory, just to be certain, is the first level you see when you open the card on computer...?

Just pick one. You don't have one at all, currently.

Yes root is first thing you see.

Again,sorry so short :(

Yeah...I went to Verizon and they are shipping me a new one! :)

I'm leaving town tomorrow for Vegas, so they are shipping it to my hotel. I'll have a present waiting for me when I get in!! :D

Yeah...normally I would have worked this out myself, but I need a phone tomorrow and I didn't have time to mess with it anymore.

I do appreciate all your help, though. Thank you!
