Root Need to activate NC before rooting?

Hi,

Am in the US for a short while and am thinking of getting a NC to take back with me to the UK as they aren't available there. Do I have to register or activate it over here before I go to the uk due to barnes and noble blocking non US IP addresses? my visit is short so I would prefer to just toss it in my suitcase and worry about it when I get back to england but don't want it to not work!

I know that I can't buy books outside of the US but I am not interested in that. Want to use it as a rooted 2.3 tablet and also experiment with honeycomb.

Some forums seem to say that you need to register first but these conflict with those that say that the NC will boot from the sd card first. Do I have to sign up with b+n to DL clockwork recovery?

Thanks! Dino

I never registered mine (or even booted it for that matter), just went straight to a custom rom (CM7). I have no interest in any reader software either for that matter. :D

If you want to open up the "stock" Nook Color by rooting it.....yes, you have to register with B&N. This lets you do a little more than what it comes out of the box.

But if you want to install a new ROM (ie CM7 which runs Android 2.3 as it's base), then as Colchiro mentioned, you never need once to register. You can start strait out with a ROM and are good to go.

Honestly, especially in your situation, there is no need to root the stock firmware. Just go strait to CM7 and have a fully functioning tablet.

As an additional thought, you might consider buying a bunch of accessories while you're here. Screen protectors, cases, maybe even power cords. I don't know if you'll be able to readily get accessories in the UK. Even if you can, shipping would probably kill the value. Might as well stock up now.

Thanks both. Sounds like I canjust worry about it later, by which I mean save the tinkering for when i am home. Can't see a better cheap toy at the minute as tablets are stupidly expensive but maybe you have all moved on from your nooks by now.

Is there a must have accessory? Never been one for screen protectors or cases unless they actually make the device better. @nj02vette - you would recommend something in particular?

While I've got two live users in thread, can you watch full screen YouTube and vimeo on the NC at screen resolution? Were all video issues resolved with cm7 rc4? Assume I would have to tweak user agent.

Thanks again.
