Help Need To Be Able to Manually Select Network

I have ATT, Mortorals Atrix 4g, and I live in Mexico. Recently the network i was using while roaming changed from mexico's TelCel network to some random number, 334050. After this happened I started dropping calls, no caller ID, and I can't dial out half the time. So I called ATT, they said that's just the network you have to use. I can't manually select a network in the settings because the option is greyed out. Does anyone know how to do this, will rooting my phone allow me to do this or is my ATT phone now a paperweight and i should just accept that I need to unlock it and get a prepaid TelCel sim?? Thanks.
