I just got my girlfriend the Droid Incredible yesterday, returned that POS LG ALLY. She's not a phone fanatic like me, so she wont be changing Roms everyday. I just want to clean it up for her, remove some bloatware, speed it up, give her more battery life, etc. I know there's probably a 1000 threads about rooting the Incredible, so I do apologize, with my son and work it's very hard to search through all these topics.

I'm just curious where to begin? What is the best root method, what does S-OFF S-ON mean and so on? I'm guessing the best root method is unrEVOked, but there is a unrEVOked Forever and unrEVOked 3.22? I wish there was a F.A.Q w/ all this info. I have my Droid X rooted but it was a lot easier than this, all I did was use Z4Root and w/ 1 click I was rooted. This seems like a lot?

Rooting stock 2.2 using unrEVOked 3.22

Unfortunately this is the only way to permantenly root a dinc as there is no one-click method. z4root will give a temporary root but it is lost after a reboot. You could try rooting that way (temportary root) and remove some of the bloat with root explorer. You can't overclock or install custom ROMs with temporary root though.

I also have yet to see anything that significantly improves the battery life on a rooted phone that can't be done on a unrooted phone, i.e. use wifi instead of 3g. Most of the custom ROMs and Kernels out there have done nothing to improve my battery life. Also the so called battery saving apps out there (juice defender free) are useless though people swear by them (paid version is $10). And as far as OC'ing goes the most that can be achieved is 1.15 which is a waste of time and won't improve the speed of the phone.

Hey don't bash juicedefender. it worked great for me. i stopped using it though because i wanted all my emails to come through when i actually got them.

I'd strongly recommend it if you don't need your 3g data on an instantaneous basis.

budmonster..I would suggest going with a miui ROM after root. Its an excellent ROM that looks/works really smooth. It does look very similar to an Iphone which some people like and some people dont. I however have found that I get at least another 6-7 hours or battery time which is great. I used unrevoked to root and it was stupid easy. I am willing to send instructions of exactly what I did if you want. One question however..which model of the Dinc do you have? SLCD of AMOLED? This will make a slight difference in the process.

The free version of juice defender did absolutely nothing to increase the battery life of my phone. The only option available to use in the free version is to turn off 3g and the phone already does that itself when you connect to a wifi network, which I have at work and at home so it was a useless program for me. The ability to also turn off wifi when not needed isn't available in the free version, only the $10 paid version, which in my opinion is way over priced for what you get.

I guess it would be useful for those who don't have wifi all day, like if you're on the road all day. But then you could just put a toggle widget on the homescreen to turn on and off 3g when needed.

I don't use WiFi, so it helps for me. The point is, assuming you're on 3g all day, it will keep data off, and re-enable it every 15 minutes so taht your emails and such come through. It's better than simply toggling because not only does it always remember to turn back on when you unlock the phone, it will also turn itself on while it's in your pocket so you can get emails without needing to toggle it yourself.

I would love to root in order to remove the bloatware - not ready to jump in flashing ROM's etc...

Is it as simple as it seems? What is the best method? I have read the forum in depth and my head seems to be spinning from all the knowledge...

It appears that you have an SLCD screen so you need the custom recovery. It is easy to replace the recovery used by unrevoked 3.22 and the instructions I used for rooting are in this link.

Root Your Droid Incredible! (AMOLED & SLCD) | JonSuh.com

This thread assumes you have the android-sdk (adb) already installed. And you need to install the hboot usb drivers that are available on the unrevoked site.

you don't need the sdk, just the drivers.

I just assumed you needed it as I thought unrevoked used adb commands to push the recovery over to the phone.

Could be wrong, but I have a new phone, slcd, and had to use unrevoked's modified drivers, not the ones that come with the sdk.

I have an SLCD too but have 3 different drivers loaded. The ones from HTC, the SDK and the Hboot from Unrevoked and it worked for me having all three on the pc. You just can't have the program HTC sync on the computer.
