Root need to unroot without using phone!

okay, my touch screen recently completely flipped out. if my phone is unlocked it will open random apps on the home screen, call people, etc, without me touching it at all. i called customer service and they're sending me a new phone under warranty, but i'm worried my warranty will be voided since the phone is rooted. and i don't know how to unroot it, considering my phone basically won't let me open ANYTHING on it, or use it at all without acting possessed, and the unrooting guide i found mentions you need to reactivate your phone when it finishes...which i'll be unable to do with my touch screen problem. i'm also really not phone savy, i only rooted it for certain root-only apps, i don't have a rom manager or anything complicated like that.

does anyone know if i'd be able to unroot it, or if there's too much of a chance it'll just completely brick my phone since it's already so messed up?

and has anyone ACTUALLY had a warranty denied because of a rooted phone? throughout the forum i've found some people say it won't actually void it, some say it will, some say they won't check...
 
I haven't heard of anyone having an issues, but I am firm believer in better safe than sorry...

You won't need to do anything from the touchscreen, and who knows maybe it will correct the problems (wishful thinking).

I have had similar problems, but only when I have had the phone plugged in using a "bad" charger...

see, that's the same guide i looked at over here: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/47349-now-you-can-live-without-fear-bricking.html but one of the comments has in huge red letters not to do it if you don't know what you're doing (i'm kind of a tech-moron), and that you'll need to reactivate after. i'm worried if i do this it'll either screw it up worse or i won't be able to reactivate it cause of the problems, and then i'll return the phone in even worse shape...i'm so torn!
 
All you need to do on your old phone is unroot it. Not activate it. You'll do that on your new phone and it'll deactivate your old phone automatically.

Can you not boot into recovery? Flash a stock ROM and go from there? Or do a factory reset? All you do is shut the phone off and boot into recovery. Problem could be fixed with a factory reset. If it's a hardware problem, then probably not, but then you're sending it back anyway.

The instructions are relatively fool proof, but to be honest, since you're returning the phone, all you really need to do is flash to a stock SBF, which erases everything on the phone and revers it to a stock DROID as if you just bought it from the company. You don't need to do a thing after that - root i gone and they can figure out if it is a hardware issue or not.

The first part of coonsters' post is dead on - you're giving them the phone back, so nothing to worry about, no need to activate it.

Follow the guide that icecold linked you to - specifically the part that refers to RSDLite 4.6.7, I'd use instead 4.9, the latest that I've seen thus far: http://www.mediafire.com/file/1vuomdrdjvmjde2/RSD Lite 4.9.rar

See the part above in red. Though rooted, that may be going above and beyond the capabilities.
 
honestly, i don't know how to boot into recovery or flash a stock rom. =/ i'm thinking i probably shouldn't have rooted the phone to begin with. i'm really not good with technical stuff, i mainly just did it to use root only apps. and i haven't tried to unroot yet, just because i'm not sure if i should. but i can't do much of anything with my phone right now. if i leave it on and don't use it for awhile, about half the time i can unlock it and have regular use of it for maybe 30 seconds before the touch screen goes all screwy again and starts selecting random things. if i turn it off for awhile (which i've had to do by battery pull, if i hit the power button it automatically selects airplane mode and won't let me choose to turn the phone off) then turn it back on it immediately is unusable with the touch screen problem. i was planning on trying to use my occasional 30 seconds of usability to do a factory reset after i got my new phone, just to send it back blank.

so if i unroot it it shouldn't make anything worse for returning my phone?
 
Factory reset will not remove root. if you want to remove root, use the link by icecold (you'll need to scroll down to the section that has title you're looking for, in red, about halfway into the red section). Click the word show and the post shows - it's pretty much the same post you were looking at before, but still, use his link not the one you were looking at and use the RSDLite I linked you to.

Of course, one important question - what kind of computer are you going to use (as in Windows, mac, etc.)? RSDLite is for Windows computers only. If you're using a Mac or Linux, then it'll be an altogether different procedure.

thank you thank you thank you. i feel like a complete idiot, i just really have trouble understanding alot of this stuff. and i mentioned factory reset in response to coonster suggesting it might fix it, i hadn't seen your first post yet. i'll definitely follow the guide then, it seems pretty simple, so hopefully i won't have any problems.

the computer i'm using is 32 bit windows vista, so everything should be fine, right?
 
one more question - will it make a difference if i do this before or after i've activated the new phone? i was planning on waiting until i get the new one tomorrow just so i can still see if i have notifications on the old one, even if i can't use it for anything. i just want to make sure it won't cause any problems if my new phone is activated/old one deactivated before i unroot.
 
Nope it will not make a difference in terms of unrooting before or after. It may cause an issue if both phones are activated simultaneously. IOW, once you activate the new phone, your old phone should stop working and you should not be receiving notifications anymore, except when connected t a WiFi and getting notifications that make use of WiFi, like Google stuff, etc.

okay, thanks again so much for your help, it's greatly appreciated. i'll unroot tomorrow when i get my new phone, and hopefully all will be well. =)

haha, great timing, i was JUST about to post. just finished, and it seems to have worked perfectly. i'm so relieved, thank you SO much for your help! i still have rsd lite on, it says "please manually power up this phone" under status and "executed 100%", but my phone has rebooted and is back to stock. it's okay to unplug it now, right? (i'm way too paranoid)

now i just have to root the new phone...i don't think i can do without barnacle...
 
yup - it is OK to uplug and ship back - out of curiosity, though, is it doing anything stupid anymore?

And rooting is pretty easy too, even if you don't go for the 1 step process....

it's been on and off. i've screwed with it since it went bad, and it seems like about half the time the touch screen registers whatever it wants, and the other half of the time it's perfectly normal. it figures, it's normal for now. oh well. now i've got a shiny new droid to use until i'm eligible for an upgrade. =)

and thank you again soooooooo much for your help. i would have been lost (and possibly paying $299 for my replacement) on my own.
 
No worries- that is what the community here does. And if your old phone at stock still exhibits the same symptoms even once, then you made a great call in having it replaced.

actually - one more quick question: do you know if there are any one click root methods that definitely work for 2.2.2 frg83g? i'm searching and all the one click stuff seems to be for earlier versions. i don't remember what i used for my last phone.
