What does it mean to run these commands as root?

adb push misc.img /data/local/misc.img
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/flash_image
adb shell /data/local/flash_image misc misc.img

Where can i find the adb shell? and idk my friend rooted it for me like 4 months ago lol. So the origninal method i guess not the easy one step method.

So this is not the method I need then? I need some serious help man! I have to return this phone today and I cant be rooted.

This is the post I was referring to:

Before I begin, let me say that an incredible amount of traffic gets generated on this board (and others) due to folks who end up somehow mutilating files that they download. The cause of this mutilation is almost always "short" or "truncated" files caused by interrupted downloads or incorrect disconnecting of SD cards "mounted" by the PC. The way you can avoid this problem to begin with is to check your checksums (Thanks to scary alien for that post). Please do this to insure the files you download are the correct files, and are undamaged.

There are a couple of files mentioned in this post:

PB00IMG.ZIP (leak-V3): 109,946,224 bytes; md5sum 1c0b0182356242a9d673a661e7458587
RUU...exe ("Official" RUU): 130,323,038 bytes; md5sum 74035b1685b279b1aa4f17fafdbec78b
update.zip (July 2010): 13,437,426 bytes; md5sum 6c509776a039149c392940025a13cff9

First, Get the Leak-V3 installed

1) Go to this Leak V3 Announcement thread and download the file.

2) Get it onto your SD card in the root folder, and make sure it is renamed to "PB00IMG.ZIP". (that's Zero-Zero in the middle, not "Oh-Oh").

3) Perform the procedure shown step-by-step using pictures in the thread http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/75384-visual-example-pb00img-zip-update-method.html (ignore the comments about "battery pull", and run the procedure through to completion).

Note: Alternatively, the steps 1-3 can also be performed by using the Windows PC-based RUU utility referred to as "Official" RUU

4) After the phone reboots for the last time, there is a good chance that it will immediately recognize that the July 2010 OTA update can be applied. If that happens, you are done. If not, complete the rest of the steps here.

5) Download the July 2010 OTA from the link mentioned in this post.

6) After download, move it to the root folder of your SD card and make sure it is renamed to "update.zip".

7) Turn your phone off.

8) Turn your phone back on by holding down the Vol-Up and End/Power buttons simultaneously. (Actually, the precise procedure is this: hold down the Vol-Up button, and continue to hold it down. Then press the End/Power button, and continue to hold BOTH buttons until the screen with three skateboarding Droids shows up - you can release the buttons at that time).

9) You will see a screen with only an image on it - nothing else. Wait about 10 seconds, and then press the Vol-Up + End/Power buttons again as in the previous step... only this time you can release them immediately. After a couple of seconds, you will see a menu appear on the phone. Use the one that mentions "sdcard:update.zip".

Ok well Im going to attempt it now. If this fails idk what to do. I will prob just send it back. Do you think they will check for root or not?

Credit goes to EU1 of course. I'm very pleased to see that you were successful. Nice work. Now the question becomes.....are you going to root your new Eris?!

no because if there are problems with the new eris they are going to replace it with a moto droid. So im giong to have to find some "problems" with it lol.

I don't know if you chose the ROM you were using with your old phone. But, you just may like your Eris with a ROM such as WhiteWidow, or XTR. Either way, good luck with your new phone/phones.

I'm gonna be using this method ASAP. FYI, they tell you ten days, but they don't actually charging you for not sending back a phone for about 2-3 months. When they do, you get it and send it back. I have forgotten this twice. So now to unroot and send back before they cut my phone off.

Edit: Confirmed that you get a 90 day grace period. Not a good idea to push it!

Be sure to report back; it's nice to have a reference of what works or doesn't. Thanks buddy.

Well that method worked for me like a charm. It was very quick and simple espically with the step by steps with pictures.

I was also running ivans official which i liked but idk if I want to root my new eris. I can tell its much slower than my old overclocked one though.
