Need to unroot

Ok, so I just rooted my phone a couple of days ago. Unfortunately I am having a screen issue so I need to send it back to Samsung for warranty work. So obviously I need to flash stock firmware to unroot it. I have the .tar.md5 file to flash, not a problem. I have Odin too, also not an issue. My question is:

Does USB Debugging need to be checked (on)when flashing to a stock firmware?

I thought it did, but a good variety of sites don't say anything about whether this needs to be on or off. I'd just like a bit of clarity here.

edit: I know I need to use a usb jig to reset counter. If there was any thing I missed, feel free to let me know

It's been a long time since I've flashed back to stock so I can't really remember if I had it on or off. But intratech's guide on xda doesn't mention about turning it on and he knows what he's talking about so I'd just leave it off.

Do you remember what your build version was prior to rooting? If you can find it, try downloading it from Sammobile.com. Do a factory reset with CWM then flash the old build using ODIN onto your phone. You will need a Jig to reset the counter, I assume you have the orange triangle displayed during boot?

I have a feeling you may have seen it already when you were looking for your firmware.

You were right, I have seen that before!!! :o

Sword fish,

I just rooted 3 days ago. I am still on my same firmware and build. Got that firmware covered.....but thanks. As far as reset with CWM, are you talking about the cache partition and the Dalvik partition? Nothing i have read has said anything about clearing anything. FYI, the only thing I have done is flash a CF kernel to obtain root.

If you are still on the same firmware and only did a CF Root, you can probably just wipe cache and dalvik then reflash your stock firmware. I take it you didn't load a custom kernel either than?

I just use the CF kernel from Chainfire....that's it.

Quick question about those two wipes. After wiping them, do you power off and go directly into download mode? Or do you power on at some point?

I would do the load right after the wipes so it doesn't go and load a whole pile of stuff during the reboot.

Hi Guys!

Brilliant site, lots and lots of useful information.

Been rooting since the G1 back in the days - so not a newbie, but not that technical either.

Basically, I've rooted my SGSi9100 and been flashing different ROMS, MIUI etc. I'm back on the stock ROM for the minute - still with root. Tried updating to ICS via Kies, only to be told not available on my device.

I assume this is because I'm rooted? If so, can I unroot and then update via Kies? Somewhere online I saw a comment that once you've rooted you can never update via Kies and have to use Odin thereafter. Is this correct?

Finally - to unroot, do I just flash the stock firmware via Odin? If so, I think the current firmware would be XWKI4 - however I can't find a link to download it, the links posted on xda developers are not working.

Basically - am I better off just waiting for the OTA ICS to come out, or should I either unroot and update via Kies, or just flash the ICS Rom via Odin (if its out, that is)?

Any and all help would be much appreciated!!

Cheers

Welcome to the forum KimoSabi and thanks for joining. I'm glad you like the site.

To unroot you just have to flash some stock firmware. This can be downloaded from here.
samfirmware.com

I'm pretty sure if you unroot and have stock firmware kies will recognise your phone. However I've never tried so I could be wrong.

Personally I would just flash ics with Odin or wait for the ics custom roms which should be out within the week. Stock LPQ firmware can be flashed from here

Hey Shotgun84 - thanks for the speedy response!

I'll let you know if update will work with Kies.

One the samfirmware website I checked out firmwares for GT-I9100 (there were a few different i9100s - mine was uk vodafone, not sure what all the differences are!)

The android v 4.0.3 firmwares are for Hungary and Trinidad & Tobago - will they work in the UK, and also for Vodafone?

Also - not sure what LPQ firmwares are - despite having seen it here and there before.

Sorry if my questions are annoying!

Thanks again

Don't worry i'm happy to help.

I'm not quite sure what's up with the sammobile search at the moment. It should come up with some results for vodafone uk. I just tried and got the same results as you.

The LPQ firmware is the official ics release. So I would personally forget about sammobile and flash the lpq firmware from the xda link I gave you.

Okay - So try flash XXLPQ using Odin and it should work for Vodafone UK?

Also - should I first do a factory re-set via CWM? I'm currently running Gingerbread MIUI.

Do I need the XXLPQ Stock Kernel? Or just get the firmware and install that?

Thanks again - once I've got this figured I'm going to blog the procedure and and will credit the site and you :-D

You should be able to flash it straight over the top but personally I would do a full wipe first as it will decrease the chance of problems.

The stock kernel will get flashed along with the firmware so you don't need to download it but there will be no harm in downloading it just in case you need it later. You will need to reroot after flashing the firmware and having the stock kernel will be a quick way to unroot should you ever need to.

Okay - taking a while to d/l so will probably do this tomorrow.

I'll search around for a root for ICS, although doubt its available as yet!

So I downloaded Odin 1.85, clicked PDA, selected the file "GT-I9100_SEB_I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXXLPD_I9100XXLPQ.tar.md5", put the phone in download mode, connected it, waited for the little box to turn yellow and clicked start. It all went through fine, the phone rebooted and then the phone became stuck on the shining S screen, after the samsung jingle.

I then got worried - then remembered something similar happened to me when I did this before (when installing the October 2011 update) - I then went into Android recovery, wiped the phone, wiped the cache and rebooted. It then worked!

I was brought to a homescreen in Polish, selected English UK and signed in. It now all seems to be working fine. Other than being disappointed with the Touchwhizz version of ICS, lol. I've since tried updating via Kies, only to be told that its not available for my device - despite not being rooted. Perhaps it is true that once you've used Odin you can't go back to Kies.

With regards to the Root link you posted - do I download the LPQ CF Root in post #8 under ICS? "CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-v5.3-CWM5.zip"

This is then just run in Odin as above?
