Am I right in saying the modaco froyo 2.2 rom was hacked from another version of froyo?

Can anyone give me a weigh up on which to use?

Yes the modaco one is already hacked.
Both are based on rooted versions of froyo, they both look & feel similar.
The neophyte 1.7.1 version is slightly quicker though.
 
Apart from performance, any other differences? Reliability, installed apps, etc...

They are both reliable & stable the apps seem to be identical in each rom.
You will have to partition your sd card for either of these roms though, use rom manager to do this.
