Root Nervous about which root to use with the new ICS leak

jwtruth35

Lurker
I'm trying to root my skyrocket for the first time but I just added the ICS 4.0.3 leak and I'm afraid of ruining my phone by using a root that isn't made for this.

I'm just getting my feet wet with smart phones in general but I think I really want to do this.

Any help greatly appreciated

welcome to Android Forums! :D

if that update is not meant for your phone then don't flash it.. it's way too risky. do updates that are meant for your phone. but in my own opinion, ICS pretty much not so stable at the moment.. Gingerbread does better (at the moment), but if you're willing to take the risk then go ahead mate! :D just make sure it's compatible with your phone!

-hit like if this helped you :D

I was actually talking about trying to root this phone. I already put the New ICS on it and was afraid to use the root links/directions that I've found for my skyrocket because they were provided before this ICS update/leak.

Sadly, I want to root mostly to try to make it easier to install s voice. Something I probably wont use much anyway. But, humans are silly like that. Tell us we can't have it and...........

First I recommend you upgrade now using the 4.0.4 UCLE2 ODIN 1 click

All of the following info I used to isntall ICS and root my phone. All is borrowed from XDA site

Download: Build UCLE2 for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket - BriefMobile

To install (this WILL wipe all data, so back up your files)

Download file
Open file ODIN
Turn off phone - pulling battery is fastest
Plug USB into the computer - do not connect your phone yet
Hold the Volume up&down buttons(do not press the power button), and plug the USB cord into phone - this will get you into download mode
Once you see the download screen - hit Volume UP to enter

Make sure that your phone was recognized by Odin - should see one of the white boxes in Odin fill in with info

Now just click start and let it do its thing.

Once done, you are now on ICS 4.0.4 enjoy

Now you'll need to isntall CWM so you can root.

First you'll need ODIN

Go here to get it
ROOT | CWM | ODIN | SGH-I727 and SGH-I727R Skyrocket

Next, you need to download CWM recovery.

You can get it from here(install is very similar to that of upgrading to ICS 4.0.4)
[RECOVERY] Clockworkmod Touch 5.8.1.3 Odin tar - xda-developers

Now after that, you'll need the superuser.zip file. You can get it here
[GUIDE]{ROOT}How To Root The ICS Leak - xda-developers

Now move that file to your SD card.

Now time to install CWM

Open file ODIN that you dowloaded before(not the ICS 1 click)
Turn off phone - pulling battery is fastest
Plug USB into the computer - do not connect your phone yet
Hold the Volume up&down buttons(do not press the power button), and plug the USB cord into phone - this will get you into download mode
Once you see the download screen - hit Volume UP to enter
*On ODIN, Select the PDA button and browse to the SkyrocketCWMrecovery.tar that you downloaded earlier

*Make sure the Re-Partition box is NOT checked*

*Select Start and Odin will do its thing.

*It should flash the Recovery file and reboot the phone.

Once you have that done, boot into recovery mode (you can use a rom manager from the play store - it's the easiest)

Once in recovery, chose the following (this is a touch based cwm - no more using the volume keys)

Install zip from sdcard
choose zip from sdcard
scroll until you see the superuser.zip and select
scroll until you see yes and seleect

Read the info, it may take you 2-3 tries before it is succesful. Once you get a success message, you are now rooted.

Next download Busy Box from the play store. Open Busy Box and choose install.

Enjoy

I highly reccomend this - I'm a noob to the Skyrocket and it was quite easy to upgrade AND root. :D
