Root nervous noob - which root method

hey all

noobie to the forum and to HTC, have a 2 week old Desire HD, been ready around a fair bit and would like to root my device and have a play with different roms etc

but as my phone is quite new (3 network uk) i'm assuming it has all the latest software and firmware updates

just wondering which is the best root method and which would be most applicable to me?

any help appreciated
