network unlock v root ?

im just trying to clarify the difference between the two

network unlock as far as i can fathom is just unlocking it for use on any network right ?

rooting the phone allows for base access to the guts of the phone in order to either replace the operating system or adding certain programs that use it to access restricted or protected programming ?

ok what i really need to know is do i need to unlock the network to add a custom rom or is it not related in any shape or form ?

i dont think i do but theres way too mutch information available out there to be sure

No you dont need to unlock it before adding a new rom..But you do have to root first to add it..

I successfully unlocked my AT&T Note 2 using the information here;

This is a "do it at your own risk" sort of thing so be warned. I followed the instructions step by step and was able to unlock my phone without rooting.

Unlock when used in context with root, refers to the bootloader.
