Help Network Unlock

I plan on unlocking my Samsung Galaxy SII (legally) that is currently locked on Orange, so when i go traveling i can us it abroad at little cost and no roaming charges.

MAIN QUESTION......

When i unlock my handset, will this mean that when Google/Samsung release new operating systems, i won't have to wait for the network to test it and them to release it and take even longer - as was the deal with the ICS upgrade. Meaning i will receive any updates at the same time as sim unlocked handsets??

And will the resulting network unlocking allow me to delete bloatware pre-installed on the device (contacts back up, games etc)?

Unlocking is just that... it will unlock you from your network provider, (Orange), and allow you to use other operators.

For everything ese you describe, latest releases, bloatware removal, you will need to root your phone as described, here. This post will, if read carefully and thoroughly, answer all your questions regarding rooting, ROM's and bloatware removal.

Just to confirm on the OS update side of things, would i get an OS update before Orange officially release it as my phone would be unlocked or just wait as normal - unless i root the phone?

As I mentioned previously, unlocking your phone has no bearing, whatsoever, on firmware.

After rooting you will not receive updates from Orange as your phone will not be recognised by Kies.

However, you will be able to use Odin to flash the very latest, unbranded firmware to your phone. You will not receive Orange branded firmware any earlier though.

Another thing to also check with the Operator is if it will void your warranty (presuming its less than a year old) !!!! stupid as it seems when i enquired about doing a sim unlock on swmbo's SG2, O2 told me that doing this would void any warranty the phone had Even though O2 would themselves be providing me the code (this was on a new phone just purchased at the o2 store and asked at the time of Purchase. so make sure and get in writing Orange wont void the warranty if you Sim unlock the phone even if its themselves providing the code to you.
