LTE to be aggressively rolled out on 1900 band
LTE network buildout to be 'mostly complete by the end of 2013'
Committed to wimax by selling devices through 2012
Does this mean for certain WiMAX devices will not be able to receive LTE?
None of the current WiMax devices can handle LTE. First LTE phones will be released "mid 2012"
Direct connect capabilities for Android devices via an app? Nice
We already have that and it works with all carriers.
LTE devices start selling mid next year, WiMAX devices no longer sold, LTE mostly complete by 2013?
And I'm eligble for an upgrade now. Don't know what to do. There's Wimax in my city (Philadelphia) but if it's not going to be improved then there's no reason to get a Wimax device. Thoughts?
If you upgrade now I would imagine WiMAX will be available to you until you can upgrade again. I would base your decision on how bad you think you need a new phone now and not worry about LTE yet.

LTE devices won't be available until the middle of next year. I suspect HTC's next phone in the EVO line will be Sprint's first LTE handset, much like the OG EVO was the first WiMax phone. If you can wait that long, go for it. However, Sprint also said they will support WiMax through 2013, so if you buy a WiMax phone now it will still be supported until your next upgrade (when you can pick up an LTE phone).
This is all very exciting, I really hope Sprint is able to keep with their aggressive schedule. Good to see so many big players in wireless on board with them.
I definitely need an upgrade. Been rocking the hero for far too long. It's too slow and always running out of memory. And this is with it being rooted, overclocked, and running Firerat's mod.
Grab an SGS2 or an EVO 3D then. You won't regret it.
Will probably grab SGS2, but am waiting on a) today's Sprint's network vision presentation, b) Nexus Prime / ICS announcement, c) any maintenance updates to solve the issues with SGS2 people report in the forums.
Looks like I was wrong about rev b
Yup, me too I guess, although we weren't wrong that the EVO 3D does support it. Hey, all it was is speculation anyway I still have noticed better reception with both 3G and 4G and how that reception has occurred really doesn't matter to me!
By the time rollout is completed I'll be ready to upgrade anyway, and I use wifi a lot.
