Networking Thoughts

Now that I've been using this phone, first time using Smartphones, I'm beginning to understand how some of this work, such as using the internet with my home Wifi and Verizon's 4G.

It seems to access some sites on the internet, if I'm using my wifi, I need to turn on Verizon's 4G to get access. Such as when I tried the default Yahoo messenger, with only wifi, it wouldn't connect but once I turned on the 4g it would. Does anyone know if I download yahoo messenger from the app store would it work without connecting to 4g? Same with Verizon's own apps, VZ Navigator for GPS.

Would using Google Maps work without connecting to the 4G? Any thoughts on how to use it for those with Verizon as the provder?

I guess it's one way Verizon make sure you are using your data plan if you don't have unlimited.

Thnx.

Maps works for me whether I'm on 1X, 3G, 4G or wifi, as does Windows Live Messenger. If something works only on 4G and not on your wifi, check your internet connection or see if it's somehow being blocked.

I just found out that Verizon charges IMing as part of Texting. So if you have the Pay As You Go for texting, you will be charged for every IM you send/receive during the conversation.

It seems to me it should be part of the Data plan if anything. So if you like chatting it would be best to have a text plan included. But I guess one could use the browser to chat using the web interface.

Just a thought!

p_025, that seems to be the key, don't use the stock app. I just downloaded yahoo messenger and it didn't switch to 4G data, but continued to use my wifi.

Thnx.
