Root Never flashed a ROM before...

Is there a guide on how to do this that explains what you are doing as you do it? I really want to understand what I'm doing, and I want a comprehensive guide. I don't understand exactly how the whole flashing process works. Thanks for any help/advice.

Have u read the how-to sticky? I would start there, its really a great guide. If you still have questions after reading it, post them.

Okay, sorry I didn't realize there were instructions in there, I only saw the terms being defined.

In the first section (Flash ClockworkMod recovery), it doesn't say anything about backing up the phone before doing this. Should I back my phone up before flashing this? How would I do this, Titanium? Thanks

Also, when you use Rom Manager and download a ROM, is the option "Backup Existing ROM" a nandroid backup? Thanks again.

You don't need to backup ur phone b4 flashing clockworkmod recovery

Use nandroid(in recovery) to backup ur current ROM b4 flashing a new one

Use titanium to backup ur apps so that u can restore them into a new rom

Yes that would make a nandroid backup but don't use ROM manager here is why(quoting Scotty so I don't have to type it all out
often a non functional rom will leave the user with no way to get apps from the market, and no file manager to side load them, making it impossible to get "rom manager" loaded onto the phone. THIS IS THE SINGLEMOST REASON TO NOT BECOME DEPENDENT ON ROM MANAGER TO BACKUP/FLASH/ETC. in some situations it will simply not be availble, and your only choice is to enter clockwork recovery to fix the problem. IN MY OPINION,EVERYONE SHOULD BECOME COMFORTABLE USING RECOVERY before attempting to use rom manager for anything other than intially flashing clockwork. once you can comfortably manipulate things in recovery,if you still feel the need to use rom manager to backup/wipe/flash then feel free. i personally do not. i feel it is much more reliable to do things manually in clockwork recovery.
How to do it manually is in the how to thread

I was a total no0b to rooting and flashing ROMS, read the stick and rooted my phone and it was a piece of cake. Studied these boards and watched the videos in the stickies and rooted my phone about a week later. If ya have any questions be sure to ask away, this site has the most helpful members ever!

I have another question. If I do "backup all user apps and system data" in titanium backup, will I be able to restore all my apps, app settings, text messages, etc. after flashing? If not, how can I do this? Thanks again!

No. You should never backup system data with titanium and try to restore it. The different roms will more than likely use different versions of the settings apks and it will just cause issues with your phone if you try to restore system settings. redoing your settings is part of flashing a rom ;) the more you do it the faster you will be able to

Ah, okay. That makes sense. Is there a way that I can backup my texts, or will I loose them nomatter what?

I always lose mine, I think some programs are out there that allow you to backup/restore them but I've never needed to do so

Search the market for SMS backup, there are multiple apps that can do it, but I find I just get lazy and live w/ losing my apps.
