Root New and have some root questions! :)

***hey guys, i decided to do my introduction here instead of the intro forum.

i found this forum when searching up solutions for the battery life 'problem' that most ppl encounter.

i must say this seems like a pretty intuitive and very helpful forum so i'm glad to be here. ;) ***

i know there are enough threads about rooting, i just wanted a perspective from someone who has already rooted their phone.

is it a must? im by no means a guru like some ppl on here but im not exactly the biggest noob either (at least i dont think so ).

i ask if it is a necessity because im not exactly the heaviest user in what this phone can offer, but i do use the phone a little bit.

with that being said, i also currently have ZERO apps/games downloaded from the market. is what some of you might be doing right now lol. i just havent found anything i really needed.

from what you have taken given my info, do you really think i need to take the route of rooting? disabling motoblur WOULD be the biggest and maybe the only reason i would root the phone, but am still on the fence about that.. unless someone can pursuade me into rooting completely.

Also, I'm having an issue where I receive 'Null' text from my friend's BB9700. If you can help me, I posted the thread here :)

i apologize for the lengthy message but i wanted to be as descriptive as possible. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!!

No, #1 it voids your warranty and #2 if you mess something up when hacking, you can brick your phone. I rooted mine because I like hacking my phone to enable the webtop mod and installing apps not from market (sideloading). But is it a must, not unless you plan on hacking your phone

If you root and really disable motoblur, you will most likely brick your phone. If you want to "hide" it, use a new launcher like Open Home or Launcher Pro; they work great and basically turns off motoblur

J is completely right on the issue of rooting. I'd like to make a couple of observations of my own though. The first is that if you're on the fence about rooting, don't do it. It does indeed void your warranty, and if you root and DON'T install a custom recovery and one of the custom roms, when the next OTA update rolls into town, and you accept it, it will immediately UN-root your phone, negating the effort you put into rooting.

That being said, my second point is that the Atrix is incredibly EASY to root. I've rooted five android phones, and found the Atrix to be *astonishingly* easy to root - it is a one click event that took only minutes to do. It's easy and almost goof-proof, which is a relief, since the Super Phones released over the last year seemed to be headed in the direction of increasingly more complex and convoluted rooting procedures. Compared to my experience with the recent HTC Inspire, rooting the Atrix was a breeze.

thanks for the replies. i originally wanted to root my phone so i could start making these crazy looking home screens i've seen around. doesnt even look like a bloody phone home screen.

then i started to read about what others were doing with a rooted phone and started to make me wonder if i really needed to do root the phone to have the ability to do what u normally couldnt.. i love the customizing aspect but something i know i would never use for that purpose and that is why i pretty much still on the fence.

thanks again for the informative replies

Another way of changing the look of your phone, which doesn't require root, is to use a launcher replacement from the market. ADW is free (for the basic unit - the paid version has more options) and there are many themes for it - paid as well as free - see which ones you like and download a couple. You then set the ADW launcher as your default, go into the ADW preferences and choose the theme you want to install and BANG, your phone is themed. Couldn't be simpler.

i've seen the name 'adw' as well as 'go launcher' or 'launcher pro' or something, and i guess a couple others which i dont remember.

but im certainly going to give this a look, thanks!

Regina 3D is a good one, too. I alternate between it and Go.
is there anywhere i can go to take a look at the themes beforehand or do i have to install the launcher and search there?

of course im not going to download a launcher just based on themes, the last thing i want is the program creating problems, as i've read some ppl do get problems here and there for different launchers
