Root New and need help, Please! Thank you!

Zman06

Newbie
Just rooted my phone and wanting to flash a ROM tonight for the first time. Just want to get the low down and not miss up. If you can help please....:D

The new apps I have installed are busy box, My back up, Rom Manager and Superuser Permission. I have done a back up and saved it to my desktop. I'm not sure what Odin is and where I can get it, and also if this is my first time flashing ROM do I still need to do a flash back? Thank you everyone for your help. One more thing (sorry) is there a good video to watch on doing this?

Before flashing any new ROM, it's always recommended that you flash back to stock with Odin. This of course can be excluded if the ROM developer states otherwise, or if you flashing an updated version of the same ROM (sometimes.)

Bottom line, yes. You need to flash back to stock using Odin. Besides, it's best you're familiar with the program for "Oh shit. I've bricked it." circumstances, as Odin can usually work these out for you.

I'd give you all my knowledge on the program and how to flash your first ROM so that you don't screw anything up, but Josh from Mobile Tech does a fantastic job at making video tutorials.

Here is his video on what Odin is, and how to use it:

Familiarize yourself with the navigation of these modes as well. They'll become something you'll see quite a bit.

After you've done all that jazz, like I've said before, do your homework and know what you're getting yourself into by flashing a new ROM (especially one with a modified kernel or OC/UV [overclock/undervolt.])
If you're ready for a new addiction, then go ahead and choose your ROM, and follow the steps below:

1. After flashing back to stock using Odin, re-root the phone, and re-download Rom Manager from the market.
2. From your computer (with the phone mounted), place the chosen ROM onto the internal sd card of the phone, NOT in a folder and NOT unzipped.
3. After this is done, unmount the phone, and unplug it. I recommend flashing on a full battery or 90% and up too.
3. Open Rom Manager.
4. Once in Rom Manager, Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery and choose Samsung Captivate. Allow the Superuser Request, and have it remember it too.
6. While still in Rom Manager, click Reboot in Recovery.
7. Once the phone is in recovery mode, you will need to use the volume up and down keys for navigation, and the power/lock button for selection.
8. Navigate down to Reinstall Packages, and select it. This may take a couple of times. So if you get bumped back into recovery mode, just keep hitting reinstall packages until you enter clockwork recovery (a different screen with more options.)
9. Once in Clockwork Recovery, navigate down to Wipe Data/Factory Reset, and then select Yes.
10. Once that's done, navigate to Install Zip from SD Card, and then Choose Zip from SD Card.
11. Choose the custom ROM that you added to the SD card earlier. DO NOT CHOOSE THE UPDATE.ZIP FILE.
12.Once it's done flashing, according to the logs, navigate back to Reboot System Now, and wait for it to reboot. This may take a little longer than normal the first time, and you also may hear voices if the ROM you are installing is using the Voodoo Lag Fix. All of that is normal.
13. Once your back up and booted, you're done!
14. Enjoy!

EDIT: I forgot to tell you to remove your SIM card and external SD card PRIOR TO the entire process. Sorry!

If you failed to remove it, you really shouldn't have any problems. Doing so is really more of a precaution than anything else.

I'm trying to install SDK Tools and it is requesting me to download Java Development kit, but I'm not finding for a 64-bit system. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you

First big Java button on the left of the page.
For platform, select Windows x64.

May I ask, why are you installing the Android SDK?
For future use?
I only ask because it wasn't necessary for rooting or flashing, unless of course you want to reboot into recovery from the command line (wouldn't recommend for a beginner.) ;)

In that first video you posted it says to use the SDK to confirm the phone is there and to reboot into download mode... Is that part not necessary?

Also a quick question about the recovery. I noticed that when you boot into recovery its the stock recovery. It's from there that you go to the command 'install packages' and it runs the update.zip then it goes into clockwork recovery. Is that the norm on the cappy? On my EVO after i have installed an alternate recovery it's always there, I boot into recovery and it's the alternate that I installed. I'm not trying to compare apples to oranges, I'm just curious.

That is why I ended up downloading SDK, but if it isn't need at this time that would be great news to know. Thank you everyone for your input. I just need a little more clarification. Thank all of you again.

To both, does your computer recognize the phone as a verified device when you plug it in?
If not, you only really need the Captivate drivers for your OS (whether it's 64 or 32 bit.)

64bit OS (Windows):
usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip

32bit OS (Windows):
SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe

If so, you can bypass downloading the Android SDK, at least in every circumstance, this is the case for me.

Downloading the corresponding drivers for your computer really can't hurt, so I recommend doing it regardless. But yeah, the Android SDK is really just kind of an aid for your computer to recognize the phone, as well as a development tool. Not required for rooting or flashing (in any of my cases I've found.)

And yes, exclamation_mark, you got it! This is the way it works on the SGS phones. :D

I was wondering if once the phone is flashed back I need to go into setting again and put the phone back into usb debugging mode?

Once you flash back to stock? Yes, go back in and put it back into debugging. You'll have to unplug your usb cable.

On the Odin software if you select start instead of master clear does that unroot your phone?

Nope. Neither options will un-root and only unroot.
Master clear will wipe all data and caches from the internal sd card.
Start will reflash the stock kernel, modem, and firmware,[which in turn/I] will un-root the phone (hence step 1 of my tutorial above.)

If you're looking to unroot only Zman, either try out Super One Click again, or download Ryan's OCLF (One Click Lag Fix) from the Android Market.
There is an option to unroot within that app.
However, I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST using this app for it's lag fix, ESPECIALLY if you've flashed a rom with any Voodoo lag fixes/any other ext4 system altercations.

So again, only use that app for unrooting (if you need to do so because Super One Click Root doesn't work.)

Zman, how far are you along in the root/flash process, if at all?
And is everything making sense so far?
Keep asking any questions you need to!

Finally, I have success! Thank you everyone. I have rooted my phone and flashed my first ROM. Everyone has been a great help. Again thank you and I know that I will have more questions here in the near future.

I've been reading your help just now and I'm looking at flashing a custom ROM 2.2.1 to my phone. I've already played around with rooted 2.1 and 2.2 but can't get my phone to successfully reinstall packages after I've flashed back, deleted the update.zip, and reinstalled packages. I get a failed and abort message. Any idea?

You flashed back to stock using Odin?
Also, you should not delete the update.zip file/CWM recovery .zip.
This is crucial to the flashing of a new ROM and more than likely why you get the abort message. There is no file to reinstall, as you have deleted it.

I recommend rebooting into download mode using the volume button combo, and flashing back to stock using Odin. After doing so, reroot the phone and download ROM Manager from the market. Flash clockwork mod recovery from the app, and then reboot into recovery using the 3 button combo. Hit reinstall packages (you may have to do this multiple times), and you should then boot into CWM recovery. From there, you can flash your new ROM using the "install .zip from sd card" option (must already have the chosen rom on the sd card).
