You can download the GB zip file straight to your phone ( over wifi preferably ). You'll need Bootstrap Recovery $2 in the market ( well worth it!!!!)

Then you should be able to boot into recovery, factory reset, flash GB and be golden.

Be sure to take a look at the first post that has a sticky at the top of this forum. It has a lot of good info explaining how and why you do things on our phones. If you have time, jump into some of the threads that you see and read what others are asking or simply ask your own question. People here are more than friendly and you should find the info to do whatever is possible on the X. The good news is that it is pretty difficult to permanently destroy (perma brick) your phone.

Just root first via zroot, purchase droid x bootstapper, titanium backup pro, root explorer, and an overclocking app like quick clock advanced (really like it) get to know how titanium and root explorer work. Then load up a custom rom (liberty, rubix, apex or whatever) and play around with that. I would not go to gingerbread until you are pretty comfortable with the whole root, backup, wipe, and restore process. Gingerbread can be a little tricky. I have a bricked droid X sitting at costco right now thank to errors on my part with gingerbread and I have been flashing 100s of roms for 3 years now on various phones.

I would highly, highly recommend not doing a single thing with ANY custom ROM until you have tried and are comfortable with the process of using an SBF file on your phone. By which I mean have the drivers installed on your computer, RSDlite installed on your computer, and you have successfully installed the SBF on your phone.

Check out Rooler's guide in the sticky for instructions.

I realize you said you don't have a PC, just didn't know if you had a PC at work or something that you could use/install stuff on.

If you can't access a PC, I would completely avoid the entire custom ROM scene. If something goes wrong, you will have no way to recover your phone.

I wouldn't recommend venturing too far into the root/rom world with direct access to a comp, might be with out a phone for a bit....
