Help New Digitizer Troubles..

Shorey

Lurker
Hello all, installed a new LCD & Digitizer on my Incredible 2 last night.. pretty simple disassemble/install for anyone thinking about replacing a screen or LCD. I was wondering though, does there need to be a gap between the LCD and the digitizer for the touch screen to work (I didn't use glue or adhesive for the replacement digitizer) because now that I have it all back together the touch screen is randomly working and my 4 "home keys" on the bottom don't work at all, they just register as the lowest keyboard keys. Its crazy because last night when I finished the install everything worked "ok" with one or two dead spots but nothing i couldn't live with, and now I can unlock the phone but the touch functions are random and the four home keys don't respond at all.. I just double checked all the flex cables and everything is correct but the digitizer feels loose in the phone.. should I glue it in? if so what adhesive would be best? any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as this phone and I have been through a lot and I'd hate to have to say goodbye. Thanks in advance, look forward to exploring this forum when I have some more time :D -shorey

Wow, you are a brave individual. I don't think would have the guts to undertake what you have attempted.
I hope someone is able to chime in with help for you, I would be on my way to the local cell phone repair shop to ask those question (or more likely to just hand the phone over and beg them to fix it for me :D)
Good luck, and please do keep us posted.

First, I swapped mine out and although you say it's easy it's not, especially if you're trying to salvage the lcd.

Second, it shouldn't matter if it's glued down/if there's a gap.

It sounds like the digitizer is bad, but I can't diagnose anything for sure without having my hands on the phone..

Does the digitizer have a lot of play? Whatever you do, don't use any liquid glues (i.e. Silicone or anything like that, the alcohol in the glue will leak through the LCD and ruin it) you would need to find a really thin double sided tape (maybe special order or online, no stores carry it)

Like I said, I don't think the lack of glue would affect function unless there was a lot of play and the digitizer was damaged in the process...

thanks for the reply.. I can pop the glass out from the front of the phone easily so i'll look into finding some tape, theres a huge craft supply store locally that hopefully will have something. Any thoughts on the home keys not functioning as a result of replacing the digitizer? Thanks again :)

No idea but like I said the digitizer might have gotten/been damaged.

I think the soft key buttons are also activated by the digitizer...

Did you have to struggle with the pad under the digitizer when removing it? Do they light up?

The original "glue" they used looked like a really thin tar tape (of course it's not tar though) that is dry when you put it on and you soften it up/activate it by heat. I have no idea where you could find this though. Try contracting a local phone fixing shop and see what they use...

Ok, so found this thread on a Google search since I am having similar problems I'm going to attempt to bring this thread back to life.

Replaced my digitizer recently as well. After I finished the install, the screen was somewhat usable but the left side didn't work very well. After using it for a few days its now gotton crazy selecting stuff and can't switch screens. Trying to select something is a joke. Could it be safe to assume that I am now in possession of a damaged digitizer? I hope not. :(
