Yep. I routinely use play the Buzz Out Loud HQ Video Podcast on my phone through the default photo viewer.

What's interesting is if you click on the file through Astro File Browser it will say it's not supported...but if you just open the default player...it will show up and you can play it.

I guarantee you that MKV's are supported...I think the phone can only handle a certain maximum resolution / bitrate. After all...even though its a 1 gig Snapdragon... it doesn't mean its even as good as a core-duo, core2duo or anything like that. It's its own entity. These are catching up to computers really really fast...but still aren't.
 
MKV is just a container, typically containing the same h264/x264 video as a MP4 or M4V container. The difference is in the number of audio and subtitle tracks that the containers support. This is why a lack of MKV support in general confuses me. It shouldn't require that much more effort to add MKV support.
 
I just tried it with an h264 mkv 720p video of an Ep of Burn Notice....and suffered the same ultra low 4fps which also causes non audio.

I then created a lower bitrate h264 version and sure enough it played.

This is why I think the phone simply can't handle the bitrate that most of us have for the mkv's that I believe most are trying (I'm not going to state where most people are probably "obtaining" them from)

Agreed, anyone expecting to dump 720p H264 video on their phone and getting them to play at a viable frame rate is going to be sorely disappointed.

I personally love this app for just being able to drop divx videos on my phone. It doesn't take long at all to encode a DVD to a divx avi, even with a now dated Core 2 Duo. I already have quite a few ripped to 480p divx that I used to play on my Omnia.
 
Thanks for the heads up on this app. Dropped both xvid and wmv files on my card and both played great. Hopefully it comes out of beta soon and is available on the market. When it does this will be a definite must have.

I converted an .mkv to .mp4 and that didn't work but then your idea came up. Maybe it's the bitrate. I'm going to try converting it to .avi first before lowering bitrate but you may be onto something.
 
It's about time there is an app that can do this .... i was just looking at Zimly Media Player but it doesn't support xvid/divx so I'm glad to have found this thread .... will give it a try and see what I think.
 
Just a heads up that the expand button seems a bit wonky with the how it shows you what its doing...there are actually 3 viewing methods.....

One is Stretching - Full Screen. Will stretch the width as well as the height to fill up the whole screen. So you may wind up with either tall thin people or short stout people depending on the original video's aspect ratio

One is a full screen keeping the aspect ratio (black bars on the top bottom OR on the sides - once again depending on aspect ratio)

The third is original size (last option when you go through it.)

I have noticed on a 624x352 XVID.....the artifacting of upscaling it (keeping aspect ratio) was only bad in dark scenes. Anything well lit you can hardly tell.

Considering there is no codec for DIVX/XVID and this is all being done within software with as far as I know 0 hardware decoding, I would say this is pretty acceptable.

Hopefully HTC will keep their word about DIVX support on the Desire and we can get it on the Incredible. Until then this MORE than does the job.

Xvix/Divx is working great for me. Haven't tried a 720p x264 mkv file yet but I guess I don't see the point? Why would you want a file that is 1280x720 playing on a screen that is 480x800? Convenience I suppose...

To install any apk file on your sd card you should use Astro File browser to find it on the sdcard and click on it to start the app manager.

You can also put it in your drop box and install right from the drop box app :)

Just a extra method
 
wow, even youtube videos are laggish. I guess only .avi will work, not even .mp4 even tho the phone does .mp4. It was even low bitrate too.
 
The app is RockPlayerBase and the .apk file can be dl here Link Removed By OfTheDamned. I loaded on to my HTC Incredible and love it. It plays all the traditional files the Incredible would play PLUS .flv and .wmv files. Best video player app I have ever used. Eliminated the need for a lot of conversions.
 
Tried it with my own copy of Equilibrium and the audio is out of sync. The same file works perfectly on my Archos 605 WiFi though.
 
Works like a champ for me! Got through an episode of Stargate Universe just from a download on the internet!!

So why isn't this thread remove? From reading other sites, this software is unreleased (beta).
