New Dolphin Browser: Better or Worse

I think it's safe to assume you haven't even played with the gestures. Annoyances 3, 4 and 5 are all solved if you would learn that feature.

he's actually saying no direct button to do any of those things. he's not talking about making gestures or if theres a way to do it. and truth is there are no direct buttons to do those things without going into some sort of menu first.

to me, i'd rather it have a direct button. like an easy access clickable button. not a gesture. i don't like opening up the gesture menu and then doing a gesture. takes longer imo. especially when it gets laggy. id rather just press a button and be done with it.

once again, i have uninstalled dolphin until they have features that i actually want.

And to use gestures you have to go into the menu first! so what's the point, lol

I did try to get used to gestures and I didn't like it. first for the above reason, and second why have to wave my finger in a certain pattern when you can just put an icon on the screen for me to tap? Not to mention you have to memorize 20 different gestures for things you want them to do.

The layout is very nice, and I really like the tabbed browsing and multiple windows, and all the options and settings it gives you, however all of the things i mentioned in my previous post are just too inconvenient for every day use.

I don't understand the reasoning behind having a direct "share" and "add bookmarks" button? How often do you share links that you need to have a direct link for it? And how often do you add new bookmarks for the same reason? I understand a direct link to the bookmarks menu itself, but for only adding bookmarks it doesn't make sense to me. IMO, a homepage, bookmarks menu, and stop function as direct buttons would be a ton more convenient

One more thing I found that might be a bug. When you double tap to bring up the browser tabs if they're hidden, if you do the double tap on top of a link, it will also click on the link. So that's pretty annoying too, and then you can't stop it because there's not stop button, lol

yes i found this very annoying since day one when i first used dolphin. always clicks on a link when i double tap to get rid of the url bar or triple tap to zoom in. i have to move over to an empty space or on text where there are no links and then do the taps. highly annoying. dunno why that was never fixed.

Three things I've noticed: When I use the hard search button from the homescreen it brings up the results in the stock browser even though I have dolphin set as default for everything. There is much more lag when you view the bookmarks/favorites area, I think it's due to the slow loading banner ad at the bottom. Last thing, for some reason I can not post on my 2nd favorite forum pocketfives.com, I used to be able to by clicking the html button, but now since the update I can't post!

I posted regularly on a forum as well from dolphin pre-update, and now I cannot. Don't know why but I thought it was interesting that you had the same problem.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Dolphin does seem to swim MUCH faster now. The pinch and scroll are super, though I think the speed of everything else is the same.
Not paying 4 or 5 bucks for ad-free until some issues are addressed; -nothing I know firsthand, only ones I've been reading about on the installation comment page. Hard to trust them as clearly half of them don't know how to set up the browser.
-Still, though, I really hate great software being held hostage by adware.
Hmmm... What to do, what to do. Pay 'em & commit some loyalty to stick with it for a while, or wait till they get it just right? -I've already spent about $50.00 on apps in 5 weeks.
...Let's see what goodies 2.1 gives us. I have a feeling that'll light a fire under many developers' asses because it may give us all things that they offer as a big part of their apps.

Tried to use it and like it again, twice. No luck.

Minor issue, my Home++ doesn't properly use dolphin bookmarks for its powerbar.

Major issue. Still much slower than the milestone multitouch browser, and also worse pinching (still), and I don't like that you can 'zoom out' of the page until its just a speck on your screen -- i like the milestone's fit to page zooming.

I tried a few times at a number of pages, but the fact is I can't swap to a slower browser with a wonky zoom just to get google bookmark syncing and gesture support.

How do you get the milestone browser?

Change your homepage to something other than the default (I set mine to google) and you get rid of the ads. Not really all that difficult to do.

how do you set home page?

Instructions are earlier in the thread, but basically you hit menu, then the down arrow icon on the mini menu to bring up the full menu, select settings then system settings and the option is about half way down. I've noticed it doesn't completely get rid of the ads though, they still appear on the bookmarks/favourites/etc. screen. If you set a blank homepage then the bookmarks(etc.) screen appears when you press the home icon on the mini-menu.

I like the old version, mainly because of:

anyone know how to get the scroll bar indicator along the right side of the screen to appear again?

This is EXTREMELY annoying to me. I have no idea where I am on a page w/o a scroll bar. What made them get rid of it?????

also the back button doesn't work as 'stop' while a page is loading anymore?

5. No stop button anywhere

The lack of a stop button (in conjuction with the back button not working as a 'stop') is annoying as well.

There are too many times I accidentally hit a link, and want the browser to just stop, but instead I have to either wait for the link to load, and then go back or I have to try to navigate to gestures and hope I do it in time.

Any time a page is loading, a 'stop' button should appear near the top.

@ Jim Dawson-The only way (that I know of) to refresh is to use gestures. I also miss the refresh button. :(

The only thing I like about the new browser is that the menu button now brings up the gesture screen.

How/where do you leave the comments that appear in the Market Place? I'd love to make a comment or two about this upgrade.

Is there anyway to re-arrange the order the bookmarks appear in? It just lists them in the chronological order that I added the bookmarks with the latest one at the top.

Thanks!

Ok, I'm ignorant, but how do you refresh a page with the new Dolphin?

Ok, I found a way to do it without gestures: press menu, then above the gestures space there is an address bar with the two arrows forming a circle off to the side, click that to refresh

Was using stock brower until last week when I tried Dophin and liked it. Just as I got use to it...Boom....update. but it's ok cause I like it even more!

I left the Dolphin Browser since getting the multi-touch Milestone Browser. But today I saw that Dolphin was new so I installed and just tested it. It is MUCH better, pinch/zoom speaking, and it does seem to be quite snappy. I'm going to continue testing, but I think they may have won me back over.
Multi-touch Milestone Browser?

*EDIT* Nevermind

Thanks for the vote of confidence. ;) That wasn't the adware I was referring to. I have my page set to Google. I'm talking about the menu option that gives you a darkened list of page choices along with the addy window. There's adware at the bottom, and it's unnecessary.
All else seems to work flawlessly.

Of course aware is unnecessary for the user, unless that ad enables you to use the app without paying a license fee. These guys spend a lot of time developing the apps. Nothing in life is free. If they can subsidize their development with aware and keep the software available without expense to you, you should be happy. If you like the app, but not the adware, buy it.

I still haven't found an app that I feel is worth more than a couple bucks. A well done popular app at even $ 2 should easily generate enough income to support the effort. I used to program in a previous life for a fixed salary. What they paid me could not have kept me programming. It was the adventure, man versus machine. When it worked right, it was a beatiful thing.

Give these guys some props.

Anyone still having trouble with opening links in new tabs?? I understand the long press thing. For example, when clicking on a link from a message in my Gmail app or Exchange email app, the old Dolphin used to open in a new tab. However, in the updated Dolphin, it doesn't do so, and a long press on the email link doesn't bring up the "new tab" option.

Also, +1 re. the lack of scroll bar at the edge of the new Dolphin. Why would they have gotten rid of this?? Makes no sense.
