Help New Droid X User - A Few Questions

Lurker
Heya everyone. I just got my Droid X last Saturday, and I've been loving what I can do with it so far (it's my first smart phone :D). Anyway, I have a few questions.

First off - What browsers do people suggeest? I played with the default browser a bit, but got frustrated when I tried to edit a Wiki page, and couldnt scroll through the text in the text box. I could only scroll the whole page. So I downloaded Dolphin (after a few google searches) and it was nice, but in ladscape, the keyboard covers up the whole page, so you can't see what you're typing. So now I've downloaded Opera (which is what I use on my PC), but I can't find the plugin's to run video and stuff (where would they be)?!

Next up - Can you put an actual document - text doc/pdf/etc on the home screens? I've got some docs I'd like to have access to directly, and I don't want to have to brows through the directorys every time I need them.

I've heard controversy about some apps that help kill processes and conserver batery power. Are they worth it? If so which one is the best?

And finaly! How do I get rid of all this stupid addware! Amazon MP3, Verizon Navigator, etc. All stuff installed by Verizon or Motorola, but that I just dont want. Hell, there's a Madden game that I can't uninstall - whats up with that!?

1. I think the issue you're having with the stock browser is that it is giving you the mobile version of wiki where it won't let you scroll. You could apply this trick to force the browser to give you the desktop version instead. In the address bar, type "about:debug" without the quotes. Then go into settings and you'll see some extra options at the bottom. Select UAString and then select desktop.

2. You could put files on your homescreen through the app Astro. Press and hold homescreen and select shortcuts. Select Astro from the list. The astro file explorer will popup. Select your file and it will put a shortcut on your homescreen.

3. The controversial app you're talking about is advance task killer. No you do not need it and it is not worth it. It causes more problems than it would solve. If you really want to manage your memory and possibly conserve battery life (this is debatable), the best way to do it is to root your phone and use an app called autokiller.

4. The only way for you to remove bloatware is by rooting the phone. I've read that instead of removing the apps, a better method is to to just freeze them so that they can't run in the background. I think you can also hide them from app drawer as well.

Thanks a bunch for the replies! Ill look into the app for the docs. Sounds like to will work perfectly.

As to rooting. It does void the warranty correct? If that's the case Ill probably wait till after the warranty expires. I should be able to deal with the bloatware until then. It doesn't seem to be draining much from the phone anyway (am I wrong there?).

Edit: I've tried to get to the about:debug in the default browser and in opera. In opera I get an error trying to connect. Im using the default ip and post that pops up. in the default browser it wont even take me there. Doesn't even attemp to load. Just sits on my home page. Idea? :-(

Sorry, I should have made it more clear. The "about:debug" only works for the stock browser. After you have entered it into the address bar and hit enter on the keyboard, go into settings (menu>more>settings) and you'll see the extra options. The browser doesn't load anything.

Yes, rooting will void your warranty. If bloatware doesn't affect or bother you, then don't worry about it. You'll be just fine.

Yes, rooting will void your warrenty "technically" but having heard from many customers/reps, they will never check for it..
