New Flytouch 3 - First steps

Hello everyone,

I will be getting my Flytouch 3 soon from Chinagrabber soon and would like some advice.

I had a bad experience with a cheaper brand and it now sits on a table and wont even charge. My question is:

What steps, out of the box, do I need to perform to get my FT3 running well?
ie root, Rom etc...

You definitely want to Root/ROM the FT3. You can do both in one step. Look in this thread: http://androidforums.com/gome-flytouch-tablets/306283-new-rooted-rom-flytouch3.html You can get both Root and ROM at the same time and lose the lame stock launcher.

Will this wipe everything on the tablet and require a reinstall or does it overwrite the OS only?

You won't lose anything on your SD card but it will wipe out any apps you've installed. If you want to do this in a few more steps, you can root, then grab titanium backup and that will save your apps and data. Then drop the ROM on and use titanium again to restore everything.
