Root New GTab Arrived with 1.2-4349 - Quick Question About Rooting

So, I have been reading a lot about rooting the G Tab, and pulled the trigger to get one. It came stock with 1.2-4349 OS. I have seen a lot of talk about the route to go depending on the build number you have, and the potential limitations of the newer 4349 build. I was planning on installing VeganTab 5.1 as it sounds like the most stable/vanilla based on these instructions:

Blendblog.net Home - Flashing the Viewsonic GTablet with VEGAn ROM and fixing the Market

But before I start, a couple of quick questions:

1. Is it best for me to roll back my build to a 1.1/older build, and will that then allow me to root it and go with almost any other rom? Can I just follow the above instructions once I go back?

2. If that is NOT the best route, but I should instead just start from this build, can you point me to information about which rom to install from 4349, and instructions on how to do it?

Thanks!

Thanks! So, I guess that I had made my mind up that VeganTab 5.1 was the best route, but now it seems that since I have 1.2, that is not possible, and that it is actually an advantage to use 1.2 to go to a better rom. Then I have two more quick questions:

1. Of the possible roms listed on the post you so kindly linked me to, is there one that is best, or one that is the least stable? Is there one that is the most popular? I am struggling a little bit with how to chose.

2. Is there a post with simple instructions, like there was for VeganTab 5.1 here:

Blendblog.net Home - Flashing the Viewsonic GTablet with VEGAn ROM and fixing the Market

Thanks again! It seems like this is a really great/cool community of G Tab owners, and I am excited to dive in.

Since Honeycomb is in alpha versions and are NOT for beginners or the faint at heart, I will defer to SolidOrange or someone else who has more experience with it.

Is switching to 1.1 the wise thing for me to do? What are the pros and cons? Thanks!

If you are dead set on 5.1.1, that is your only choice. With that said, the gingerbread/honeycomb builds are getting pretty good. Really no harm in running vegan ginger or cyanogen7 at this point as most of the kinks are worked out and they are based on android 2.3 instead of 2.2 like vegan 5.1.1.

The pros are that you can install VEGAn 5.1.1 from a 1.1 bootloader, as well as VEGAn Ginger Edition. The cons are that there aren't a lot of Honeycomb options for 1.1, and xda advises that shifting bootloaders can get messy:

"It is possible to jump from 1.1 to 1.2, and back again. But think of this as a bridge between the two. I have done extensive tests in the last month on this, and it does work MOST of the time if you follow directions. But even when doing everything right , there is still a small chance that you will "fall of the bridge" and into the abyss (soft-brick). And if you attempt to jump between them with clockworkmod, you will fall for sure, 100% of the time. Think of clockworkmod as a "bridge that is out".

The most sturdy bridge, going on my own testing, is the one based on build 1.1-3588 full stock. This makes sense because this is what Viewsonic would want you to be on, before jumping to 1.2. The reverse (1.2-4349 stock, for example) is also fairly sturdy. But again, it is a higher risk than staying within the same branch."

If it fails, you'll have to use nvflash to get your gTab back to an operating state. I have never used nvflash (and hope I don't have to... sounds intimidating to me). But once you DO an nvflash, it probably won't be so hard and scary... AND you'll have the 1.1 bootloader that you desire :)

Once you're actually ON 1.1, then you will WANT to install ClockworkMod if for no other reason than to make routine backups.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my messages! So, I have followed the link posted by solidorange ([ROM][BL1.2] Gingerbread Rom Collection for Bootloader 1.2 Gtablet\Zpad T2 - xda-developers) and I think I am going with the Clemsyn 1.5ghz version. So, can I just follow the instructions here:

Blendblog.net Home - Flashing the Viewsonic GTablet with VEGAn ROM and fixing the Market

And substitute the files on the linked page? Do I have to use all four of the files listed? Sorry for the noob questions!

I am partial to these instructions (maybe because I wrote them :p)

http://androidforums.com/gtablet-al...-install-custom-rom-fix-market-add-flash.html

All kidding aside though, I made that thread assuming no prior knowledge of android whatsoever, so they are much more thorough than the ones I have found elsewhere.

Thanks again! I will definately be using your instructions!

Last question (hopefully), the rom I want to install has the following files listed:

cm7.0.3 (GB2.3.3, stable build):
http://www.mediafire.com/?8oucsc81csl5m75

cm7.1RC (GB2.3.4, latest build):
http://www.mediafire.com/?7111c0jwza1ea37

gapps:

VEGAn-GE-7.0.0-RC1-Harmony (GB2.3.3, stable build):
http://www.mediafire.com/?upb49eq4d7vpzva

Do I install of these? Are they each a supplemental addition to the base? Is there an order to install? Thanks!

First link is to stable version of cyanogen, the second is a nightly build that will have a few new features, but also more bugs. decide which is better for you and flash that one only, followed by the gapps.

If you use the last link, it is a standalone with gapps already included.

I would honestly suggest the first link (followed by gapps) or the last link for a new user.

Exactly what I needed. Is the last file that includes the gapps the stablebuild from the first file?

Last link is unrelated to the first 2. It is a stable build of Vegan gingerbread, which I personally prefer. The only reason i switched to cyanogen is for its ability to stream netflix without having to edit code to trick the app into thinking your g-tab is a supported device, which is required on every other rom at this point.

Thanks again for all of the advice! So, I installed the last one on the list:
VEGAn-GE-7.0.0-RC1-Harmony (GB2.3.3, stable build):
http://www.mediafire.com/?upb49eq4d7vpzva

I have the full market, but I am unable to actually download and install anything - I get an error stating "google services framework has stopped unexpectedly". Should I just simply try to reinstall the rom again? Do you think the first one on the list:

cm7.0.3 (GB2.3.3, stable build):
http://www.mediafire.com/?8oucsc81csl5m75

Is more stable?

Thanks!

Try force stopping then clearing the data/cache for both the market and Google services framework under settings->applications->manage applications->all, then reboot. It should prompt you to login to the market again after it restarts and clear up your issue.

If that doesn't work, then try reinstalling vegan or switching to cyanogen.

So, I have installed both of the versions of the 1.2 based gingerbread roms refernced above, and both seem to have problems. I experience a lot of errors where the google services framework has sopped unexpectedly. One of the versions it allows me to find apps, but they then just hang up while downloading. Is there a more basic version based on 1.2 I should try, or should I now consider switching over to 1.1?

One other clue - when I try to access the internet, I get an error that says "varification of server certificate failed". Could the issue just be some kind of connection problem?

Most force close issues can be fixed by repartitioning your internal sd card which can be done thru clockwork. I'm not sure if you already done that. It only needs to be done once but it wipes everything from your internal memory so make sure to back up anything you don't want to lose on your computer.
