new lcd screens???

The main difference between the screens is the drivers and thats bout it. The v2 of the phone pritty much only had the nova only.

That might certainly cause a brightness change - not holding my breath believing it just yet.

I for one am glad that they are using 2 different screen companies because with that we shouldnt have nearly the supply issue that the incred is having this very moment

Ja wohl.

Sorry - this was what I wanted to avoid.
Hey, I just appreciate your clarifying my confusion. I probably only get to spend a total of a half hour a day reading the forums, so it's easy for me to fall behind.

No need to jump the gun, I just leave those compadres alone to work. ;)
Sounds good to me, I'm not in a hurry.

Do you know if they're working on anything for the 20fps recording limitation?

I really don't, but in going over the video issues, I did do some digging and you may find these posts interesting on that subject. (not trying to shamelessly self-promote, but yeah, they're mine)

Just so we're clear - the frame rate limitation is not a hard number. For VGA, I was getting near-30 fps and for 720p in what I considered acceptable light I was only getting near-10 fps.

But - I don't care if they get the Evo to record at 60 fps - it's recording into a really, really lousy codec.

The video that people are criticizing isn't the first documentation of the allegedly different panels. Another fairly reputable site, AndroidGuys documented this issue much earlier, although it seemed to not receive the same amount of coverage:

The Tale of EVO Screen Woes: A First-Hand Account (With Video) | AndroidGuys

This kind of corroboration, along with the XDA information that there are two kinds of panels, Epson and Novatel lead me to reasonably conclude that there is accuracy to the suggestion that there are two panels, and that they significantly differ in contrast/color saturation/white balance... quality?

I'd also point out that in the video referenced, the reviewer does point out that the screen transitions when using the backlight control on the google powercontrol widget are very different between the two models. This isn't a "variation in output" or "screen burn in" issue. They are definitely two different panel designs.

The jury is out in terms of objective quality, but I would say subjectively, if people prefer warmer white balances and more color saturation (I think people generally do), then one screen design is subjectively of higher quality.

This is incorrect. There were different suppliers since day one. Difference in screens not a "change" just different.

Same goes for those ........ who keep saying they want a "later" version. Version 3 phones were sold on launch date. Screens from both suppliers sold since launch date.

Not a change, just different.

From what I hear, all version 002 phones have novatec screens and version 003 phones are a mix of novatec and epson. If thats the case then your theory that they just used 2 different suppliers from day one is flawed. Obviously at some point they switched over, or added, the epson supplier to the mix. They didn't start out with both from day one.

Which one is that?

You may be correct, but that link doesn't necessarily lead to correlation.

The darker screen had the grounding problem. I saw nothing in that article that identified the screens.

I would correlate that screens with the grounding defect have an accompanying display brightness issue. (edit - In other words, if the screen is proven defective for any one function, it can't be judged for other parameters. It's broken.)

Not enough data - conclusions can be drawn either way.

The fact that there are two screen makers involved is parallel information and may correlate - or may be purely coincidental.

Until we see data that all of one screen type are the ones with definite brightness/saturation issues - AND - that all of those with that problem are not also having the grounding issue - then you can make the correlation you've made.

You can't solve for three unknowns with two equations.

One equation - one unknown. It's the law. ;)

PS - From the article:

Just to be the tech savvy nerd that I am, I decided to also check out the screens infamous grounding issue. Sure enough, my replacement EVO had that problem as well. I was shocked! Not only did the screen look like it belonged on a sub $200 smartphone, but unless it was on a sturdy surface, it wouldn't respond properly to touch. This is totally unacceptable for a top-of-the line device.

Agreed. Broken devices are unacceptable.
