Anybody notice the new maps version? So much better!! :D

I was always jealous of the iPhone's ability to cache the maps - it had such great performance. Now the DX is even better than that...!

...the ability to rotate confuses me though. Wish there was a way to make North always up!

The red arrow on the top left of the screen indicates North. If North was always up you wouldn't be able to rotate the screen.

FYI, if you tap on the arrow that indicates North, it will rotate the map back to North up and directly overhead instead of tilted.

The new Maps update is indeed very very good. Now all they need to do is add a speedometer and speed limits and we're all set!

Well, I would like more accurate maps. I could live with the lack of niceties but, I have been brought to the wrong place more than once. This is not just Google, I also have Copilot and their map is exactly the same.

I always had trouble "moving" the street view pin/peg before.

Check it out now. Much much easier, faster, versatile ..

Cool update...

I wish they would work as well as they looked. I d/l new version at work and put in my home addy and it directed me about a mile from my house. ARGH

Question: I'm going to Puerto Penasco Mexico next week, and won't have cell service at all. I know the GPS will work, but how do I store maps (cache)? It's not that I'll get lost getting there, but it would be nice to have the street detail maps cached and usable while there.

If I'm looking the maps up now, does the DX store them until I clear the cache, or??? Do I create a trip now, and when I pull it up the day I go it will already be cached? If I create the trip when I leave for Mexico, then lose cell coverage when I get into Mexico, will the maps already be cached and I can still use the GPS to reach my destination?

Thanks.

Not shootr, but you can try it now. Just go browse all of that area and then turn your phone into airplane mode. See if it retains the data....

I assume everyone has seen the pan and tilt with the 3D buildings in major metro areas. Pretty cool that they animated this. Next they will probably overlay the Sat image and wrap it. LOL.

Holy sh*t I just saw the demonstration of this on Jimmy Fallon and checked it on my X, that is awesome.

It's only in major metro areas and you have to be zoomed in to a certain point. For the 3D buildings that is.

This with a time at destination and trip speed (not just simple speedometer) like the Garmin Nuvi has.

And this too. My house if 5 spots off on the map. honestly I don't mind as I don't want people googling my home address and getting it right. (for as long as I possibly can)

I really wish Garmin and Google's agreements carried deeper in products. Probably take another year. I mean I almost bought the Garminfone, but the sceen and processor was too weak. Ironically the latest garmin nuvi's have google software and capabilites.

Use two fingers to drag and tilt the map. One finger to pan as you previously did. Use two fingers to rotate the panned map. Some phones do not support these features. The X supports everything. The Eris does not. The Vibrant (maybe the Fascinate too) supports tilting but not rotating. I haven't checked other phones.

Why don't go to google maps on you pc, find your problem spot, click right mouse, Report Problem and describe the problem. I've submitted multiple change requests and all were corrected within a month.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Garmin is not using google map but Navteq's.

Well it took a while to translate. but I have posted a few corrections to them. hell you can even do it on the device. Its not off much

Yes that was my point. Google should have partnered with Navteq when they partnered with Garmin.

I don't know what causes the inaccuracies people describe. I haven't seen a situation where the position marker wasn't dead on - to the point of what corner of the house I'm in.

The marker is always dead on for me too. Although that could be because I live in the city that is home to Google headquarters... hehe. :]

I've tried to get the 3-D buildings in NYC, San Francisco, and Phoenix (all cities that are supposed to have them), but I can't get it to work. I can tilt, twist, and zoom, but no 3-D.

What am I doing wrong?

I can't speak for NYC or Washington, but for San Francisco, the 3D buildings only show in downtown areas. You also have to zoom in close to see it.
