New Nexus 5, unhappy

Well I just got my Nexus 5 white 16GB in on Friday and I thought I did alot of research on what I wanted (lots of youtube vids), well I was wrong.

I don't like the fact that Google Hangout is their default text messaging app and no external SD card storage. If I would have know that I would not have bought it. Now i'm stuck. O well.

Bummer you didn't know about the external storage. You may consider looking into one of these. You can pick one up for $15 shipped.

If rooted you can use it for free but if root is not an option, there is a paid app that works with it. There may be more app options now, I'm unsure about that.

As for messaging, you can set any messaging app that you want as your default. 8SMS is a popular choice.

Wow, I like those ideas!...esp that external storage one. Does the 8SMS also do MMS for sending/receiving photos?

You can use any SMS app you like and set that as a default.

As for not knowing about the lack of SD card...

I like 8SMS for SMS/MMS.

Also, I can't help you with the SD card situation but finding that out after you got the device home does not indicate "a lot of research"!

Where did you buy the phone from? If it was new and purchased over the internet, you should be able to return it for a full refund under distance selling regulations.

What's all this about lack of SD card facilities? Even the almighty iPhone (!) doesn't have one.

And what's wrong with Hangouts? I find it very useful.

I'm just not a fan of hangouts and have gotten used to every phone I have had (Samsung, LG, and 2 HTC's) have their own SMS/MMS software.

I think to much google is a bad thing, but I like the basic principle of the phone, no bloat-ware. I can install and remove what I want.

I have since got the 8sms app someone recommended and I like it. I also downloaded superbeam to transfer some of my photos to the Nexus.

Next is the miniSD card reader for andriod.

I ditched hangouts as well. The SD thing was a minor irritation. I dont use alot of memory so I havent a fear up bumping even 16GB....

What irks me is the lack of removable battery. Hit me hard sitting around the hospital today. Killed it quick.
I guess I have to have a wall charger at home, work AND in the vehicle. Not to mention a car charger.
All in the name of shaving a mm of the thickness.
Stop jerking around mfr's , give me a 10mm thick phone and a 3000+ mah battery so . I . Can . Use . MY . Phone . like it was intended to be used.

I carry round an anker external battery pack, not that I need it much /at all

its all about the cloud storage and there r plenty of sms apps like mentioned about..i like gosms ..been using it for yrs.

Not many devices offer sd storage anymore and this feature seems to be dissapearing! Hangouts works great as a messaging app and if you dont like it you can use any other one your heart desires from the play store! I use chomp sms which works great. The only reason I dont use hangouts is because I like a pop up when I get an sms and as of now hangouts doesnt offer one.

I don't use hangouts and i'm glad of no SD storage myself and my battery is fine. What irks me is the reception.

I've been looking to see one for about three months, with no luck. Sprint-no, T-Mobile-no, BestBuy-no. So now, my son-in-law gets one from T-Mobile and brings it to my house to show me. I have to say this...I'M NOT IMPRESSED. I don't like the feel of it(too much plastic) and light weight. Operating system is very good, but what's up with the LED light? Who decided to put it at the bottom of the phone? I liked the N4 much better, but it didn't have LTE. I'll wait to see what the specs of the N6 are. It's a shame, because i really wanted to like it.:(

LED has been at the bottom on all Nexus devices - don't see the issue.

Build quality is obviously personal preference, but I say it bests the likes of Samsung. Also I prefer it to the N4. The N4 was fragile and the pattern behind the glass was just ugly in my opinion.

Best of luck finding the right device for you.

It does beat Samsung. That's why i wanted to get one. LED on my friend's N4, is on the top, where it belongs. Maybe there's a difference with the European version. Thanks, i'll keep looking.:)
P.S. I do like the HTC One.

Those seem like pretty minor things, but the N5 isn't for everyone.

The new HTC one should be announced in just about a week, check into that if you like the current one.

I think the N5 is like a piece of beautiful art! Can't please everyone all the time though, that's the good thing about Android, there'll be a device suitable for you with more coming all the time :)

Afraid not. I had a Nexus 4 before the Nexus 5 and the LED was most definitely on the bottom. There was a single model of the phone for the entire world unlike the Nexus 5 which has two versions. Galaxy Nexus LED was also on the bottom. Not sure about the Nexus S though since I didn't have that one. Nexus 4 also did have LTE if you were on T-Mobile or various Canadian carrier, but it took some modding in order to get it to work.

Perhaps waiting on the Google Edition of the upcoming HTC One will be the better option in order to get roughly the same OS experience as a Nexus with the hardware and build quality of the HTC One.

lol yet you own one of the most plastic phones out there, an s3 :p

I think the matte finish on the n5 is excellent, plus the weight of it is amazing. From my experience, when people hold it for the first time , most think the battery is missing or something.

I think the lightness is great, plus the lighter a phone is, the less damage it can do to itself when it (inevitably) gets dropped.

There is no such thing as the perfect smartphone, I speak from experience with lots of brands, models and platforms. For me it's about being open minded, willing to do the research and looking forward to what I will learn from each smartphone I buy.

It's also important to consider the complexity involved in designing and building phones that meet as many essential functions as possible given the compromises that arise. Designed by highly skilled engineers, by and large the various Android phones we have to choose from is quite impressive.

Finally it boils down to identifying the features that each of us requires to meet our most important needs, remembering we can't have it all.

Currently my Nexus 5 is the fastest, most stable and enjoyable smartphone I've owned. It meets all of my must have features and more, very impressive indeed :)

I completely agree. Despite having a much larger screen than my wife's (inferior!) iPhone4S, my N5 seems to weigh about the same. I suppose that's because it doesn't have a partially-metal case.
