New Note - do a factory reset first?

I'm edging ever closer to my current contract ending and getting my Galaxy Note. I have been following threads on here with interest. I assume that it will not have ICS pre-installed yet so will need to do it myself. There has been some discussion about factory resets helping to set the Note up well.

Is it worth, before installing any apps/data, doing a factory reset on Gingerbread before I upgrade to ICS and then doing a second factory reset? Or will that put it back to Gingerbread? Will I even get the choice to do a factory reset on Gingerbread or will I be offered the ICS update as soon as I turn it on? Can you tell I'm a bit confused?

Also, I currently have an HTC Desire and all updates have been OTA. How does the upgrade to ICS work? I keep seeing Kies/Kies Air mentioned.

So many questions and I haven't even got the Note yet:) . Thanks for any help.

I too upgraded from an HTC Desire, it is quite a change but I am very pleased I did it.

I have read of Galaxy Notes now being shipped with ICS if not I received a notification of an OTA update and then downloaded it OTA.

Out of the box if on GB I am not sure it will serve much purpose doing a reset as I think it will return it to the same state.

I have read of people having problems upgrading via Samsung Kies - and to be honest I think Kies is pretty poor indeed even if you are lucky enough to get your phone to talk to it. In practice with OTA updates and File Managers such a ES File Explorer Kies is effectively redundant.

Kies, like the HTC equivalent - HTC Sync, can be temperamental, but for me Kies handled the ICS update without missing a beat. Kies is more than a file manager, it syncs content - like contacts and calendar with my Windows Outlook 2010, for example.

I now find it easier to have Outlook sync the Calendar with Google (using Google Calendar Sync), and the phone Sync with Google also - so all of the same Calendar.

Google also holds all of my phones contacts - but fairly normal practice.

I don't know what happens with contacts if they appear in Outlook via the sync - I assume not.

Thanks everyone, so it's install ICS and then do a reset. I also use Google Calendar Sync to back up to Outlook which means that my eggs aren't all in the Google basket. I didn't realise that Kies was the equivalent of HTC Sync which I never got on with, hence the use of Google Calendar Sync. Not sure I'll be bothering with it.

Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have more questions soon!
