Help New Optimus V User (almost)

Just bought an Optimus V. Waiting for my contract with Verizon to expire Sunday (2/27). Can I put my phone contacts in the phone before I activate it? I read on some posts that activating the phone and porting the number are 2 different things. What can the phone do before my old number is ported if you can't make or receive calls?

You can do anything with the phone I set up my email, contacts and downloaded apps over wifi then once the phone was activated I was ready to go.

I even rooted it before I activated it.
