Help New phone with battery problems

stocked

Lurker
Hi guys, I have purchased the Samsung Galaxy S2 about 3 weeks back. It has been working fine but I am having terrible battery life issues.

I know next to nothing about phones so bare with me.

Currently my phone battery life is literally 8 hours and I can't make sense of it. I did try looking at other threads but I think I have a combination of listed problems.

Firstly my Exchange Services is plowing through my battery at no mans speed, it's currently using 163mb. I have deleted my e-mail accounts from the phone and reset but still no luck.

Secondly when I go into task manager and look at RAM I see something worrying, many apps open in the background. Without me opening a single app when turning my phone on, it managers to close between 20-30 apps when I clear memory (and no I didn't go on a mad downloading spree when I got the phone). I have no idea which apps they are or how to stop this.

Thirdly when my phone is charged I remove the charger, but I often still get messages saying it's on change. It will either say "remove charger", or it will flicker on and off of charge (without me touching it) and it even comes up with a message "voltage to high, please remove" or something like that.

Sorry for the essay but it's really frustrating having a new phone with these problems, if anyone could help on any of the points I'd be really grateful, and bare in mind I know nothing about phones so if you could write as if you were explaining to a 6 year old I'd probably just about get it!!

Thanks in advance guys

Hello and welcome to the forums stocked - thanks for joining! :)

Unfortunately, the battery life of smartphones isn't generally as good as the days of the old Nokia phones that would last for a week on a single charge. If you have a look at this thread http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/558996-galaxy-s2-international-faqs.html you will see that there is a link to a post with some tips on getting the most out of your battery :)

With regards to apps running in the background, Android is designed to be its own task killer, just let it do its job, it is pretty good at it. Just because you see an app held in RAM, that doesn't mean it's taking up battery. You definately do not need a task killer... I hear things like "I use it to free RAM to make my phone faster/make XXX run better". If Android needs more RAM, it'll free it of its own accord as and when required. If you notice your phone acting sluggish, reboot. If it's consistent, check what's taking up CPU usage and if it's an app you've installed, uninstall.

If you want a more technical overview of how Android manages tasks, take a look at what google have to say about the matter here.

As for your charger problem... that does sound a little more serious. I am not familiar with your phone but think that it could be worth speaking to your network provider/the shop you got your phone from to see if they can offer a replacement/repair (I would have thought that, as you only got the phone 3 weeks ago, you would get a replacement without any issues). Perhaps one of our members who has the same phone may be able to offer a solution for this issue!

Hope that is of some help - feel free to ask for more info if you need it :)
