Help New RAZR: every now and again, No Data Connection?

Been to 2nd level tech support at VZ about this issue. Was told by tech that its a VZ issue regarding false signal switch from 3g to 4g, and how it relates to Gingerbread version. They feel it will addessed in next OTA update, or ice cream sandwich, whichever comes first.

As stated, most all of the phones are having this issue. IN my area it has become worse over the last 30 days. Hopefully, the new OTA will address this. I have better luck in not running 4g unless I have a large download or very active on the phone,

I am having this issue w my new RAZR daily, including right now, which is why I'm here. It just loses web signal for a while (I can still receive calls and txt though.) I just tried Airplane on/off, and the signal did come back after a few seconds. What a drag. I will keep checking back here for hopefully better news.

Like other folks here, I went from rarely having the issue to having it a few times a day. Now I am getting sudden drops to 1x and have not had that before, since owning the Razr. That happens, plus the data drops.

I have noticed that is related to switching between 4G to 3G. It does not always switch. I get the no data connection but the 4G icon is there.

When at work I have a smart action setup to disable cellular data in favor of the wifi network. The last several days, when leaving the office, I have had to put the phone in airplane mode and then back to enable 4G data. the 4G icon is there, but it is greyed out until I do this.

If I leave the phone on, plugged in and running (Pandora at work) the connection stays on..no poblems. On for 4G now. If I just have the screen off and turn phone back on...I am having to airplane mode and or start and stop data to re establish connection. I hope that this is a temporary thing, that is why I took back the Nexus. (diffrence is the Nexus never regained signal)

I've had my RAZR for a little over a month now, and it's starting to really have issues with data as well.

In 3G/4GLTE mode it seems to work fine, but if I enable my WiFi connection, it's very hit or miss. Sometimes it works fine, other times NOTHING works. I've tried switching airplane on and off and that sometimes fixes it... for a few minutes if anything. I wasn't lucky enough to be one of the people with grandfathered unlimited data plans so I'm limited to 4GB/month and would really like to be able to use my WiFi while at home.

EDIT: Okay, it appears the WiFi on my phone is entirely dead at this point. It was working fine this morning, but now I can get it to connect to my router, and that's it. Apps like Speed Test, Twitter, eBay, YouTube anything that needs a connection just have the spinning icon and nothing shows up for about maybe 5-10 minutes. Then if I'm lucky a pic will load, or something might happen. *sigh*

I disagree on that being a total network problem...try one more thing- A hard reset! Use it for a day, if the same issues start happening , call VZW tech support...Tell them that you've been having major connection issues, and that you've performed a hard reset, and the problems are still happening. They'll cut to the chase and get a replacement sent out to you with a new sim card as well when u mention you've tried the hard reset and it didn't help at all...Good Luck .

I agree with Sean. This can't be a Verizon network issue if it's wifi that's having problems (this assume that other devices can connect to the wifi).
Do a factory reset on the phone, don't load any apps (or only those you MUST have) and use it for a day or so. If it works fine, then most likely there is/was a problem app on your phone. If it still misbehaves (which is what I'd expect) then it's time for a replacement.

Well, if a hard reset is my only option I guess I have no choice. Before I try this though I have a new discovery and a few questions.

When my WiFi "dies" on my phone, I am still able to access my router via 192.168.1.1 in the browser. So the phone is connected to the router correctly, but internet connection is lost entirely. Other WiFi devices such as my dads Samsung Stratosphere phone and my Acer netbook are still able to function perfectly fine over WiFi at the same time.

After some experimentation, I found that airplane mode no longer fixes the problem. I also noticed that if I connect to the router, and change my transmit channel it temporarily fixes the problem and my phone regains its net connectivity. However, this only lasts for about 15 minutes to an hour, then I have to change router channels again. It doesn't seem to matter which channel though. I changed it from channel 1 to channel 7, and it worked. Then after it "died" again, I changed it from 7 back to 1, and it started it working again. So I don't think its a problem with the router at all, considering other devices still function the entire time. I just found it interesting that changing the channel on the router "fixes" the problem for a short period of time.

Lastly, I have a few questions. If I do a hard reset on my phone, how do I go about backing up my contacts or text messages or any other possibly savable data from the phone before I reset it? I want to lose as little data as possible.

EDIT: I take that back, it seemed to be a fluke on being able to access my router with "dead" WiFi. Just tried it again after WiFi conked out and now I can't even access the router directly. Disabling WiFi however, the LTE connection works just fine.

EDIT 2: Switched channels on router again, didn't fix it this time. Can't seem to get connected to WiFi at all regardless of settings.

EDIT 3: I also should mention that my phone is rooted. So is there anything I would need to do before I see about getting it exchanged for a replacement?

EDIT 4: Hard reset my phone, still unable to connect to router. Other devices connect fine however. After hard reset though, I noticed I still have the Superuser app installed. How can I get my phone back to factory settings so I can exchange it?

EDIT 5: Unrooted my phone, Superuser gone, pretty much as far as I can tell it looks completely like it was when I got it. How easy is it to exchange this for another one? Are they going to ask any specific questions or will it be fairly pain free to get a replacement?

I am experiencing numerous and frequent data drops when the RAZR is set to CDMA/LTE networks. If I have connection when I first try to access an app or the browser that requires it - I'm lucky to maintain it more than a few minutes. Then it drops to nothing - no 4G, 3G or even 1X... and then it's minutes or longer for it to decide to reconnect. I came from an HTC Incredible that never had connection issues on 3G, so this is very frustrating for me.

We got one for my wife a day after I got mine, (before I realized mine was having major issues) at the same store even, and hers doesn't have these issues. She is completely happy with hers.

I've had it a little over a week and I'm trying to decide if I keep fighting the Verizon store for a replacement or if I just give up on it and trade it out for the Rezound. The place I bought it is reluctant to replace my handset even though it's within my 14 day purchase period. Of course it won't reproduce the connectivity issues for them in store as it does at home and around town for me...

I am having similar problems several times a day. Strong signal (-75dBm) no data for up to 30 minutes today and my wife is sitting next to me with no data connection problems. I rebooted and it didn't help but suddenly started working for on 3G. I am set to 3G/LTE. I teach her to watch for the blue signal colors while I see only white which gets frustrating very quickly. I'm not sure why this has become more frequent for me lately and I have never had WiFi issues when near my router. I hope the 2.3.6 update helps.

I've also noticed on mine that the signal bar color means NOTHING since the newest update a week or so ago. My 3G/LTE icon used to disappear when connected to WiFi, but since the update BOTH icons are visible now. If I disconnect from WiFi then reconnect, the icons are BOTH blue for about 5 minutes, then both turn grey even though they still are working. That was, before the WiFi in my phone seems to have stopped responding 90% of the time. It's intermittent, I'm hoping they don't expect me to SHOW THEM directly at the store to exchange it, because I may not be able to replicate it on the spot. I hope this issue gets fixed in the long run, but regardless something is up with my handset and it does need replaced.

Edit 5 is an easy one...

Just call VZW tech support, and explain to them what I said previously....That you've been having lots of issues with your phone and its data connection, as well with your wifi connection, and you've performed a Hard Reset and it still hasn't fixed the issue. Honestly, sometimes you get a real beauty that goes through every single step and believes they are the answer to all answers. So in that regard I'd say you've done 2 hard resets and it still hasn't fixed the problem, and maybe even throw in there that youve also experienced a few random reboots out of no where...lol, never hurts to throw a cherry on top...

Good luck getting a Good Working unit...
At the end of the day you should have no issues getting a replacement.

Cool, cool. I've had the phone for over a month though, so do you think they will exchange it for free for "factory defects" or are they going to charge me for it to replace it? Also, related to that, do you think there is any chance they would let me swap it for a white model? The one I have is the current black one, but the white model didn't exist when I bought it.

All the blue signal bars mean is that the phone is connected to google servers. It does not signify a connection to the data network of choice. If it's white, and still says 3g you should be connected, and same with wifi..

After I set a smart setting to have data enable during work hours 8-6..I have not lost signal a single time.

Just an update to my situation. I took my phone to the local Verizon store, and they refused to exchange it. They told me that I would have to call a support number and request to have a replacement shipped directly to me. I even sat there and tried to reason with them to just exchange it in store and they refused. They also gave me a bunch of ***t about exchanging it for no reason. I guess so many of these phones have data problems that they are starting to think people are doing it just for fun or something. IMO they need to recall them all and replace them with whatever the next model coming is, like the RAZR Maxx for example. /frustrated

all 4g phones on verizon's lte network have experienced this. it's been the cause of thousands of unnecessary returns.

What is going on with the RAZR? I just got it two weeks ago and I've been less than impressed with the Data connection. It seems like I have no connection at random times in the day. This is a problem since I relay on email. It happens no matter what setting is on, CDMA/LTE or CDMA only....

Any suggestions?

Do a battery pull. ;)

I am pretty sure it is the network, not the phone.

i would agree and think its your networks ive got the motorola razr as we call it in the uk and im on T Mobile Uk and it is rock solid it has never dropped connection with the network we only have 3G network though so perhaps its your 4G networks that are the problem i dont know!

I have the same problem. Data randomly drops to nothing for several minutes, often 10-30 minutes. I lose all email connectivity, which is the worst. Then it will eventually connect and i'm back at all bars on 4G.

I'm suspecting its the network. Had the same problem on my Droid Charge, and HTC Thunderbolt. I live in a very strong, solid 4G area.
