Root New Rom without Rom Manager

Hi all,

I'm going through the process of rooting and installing a custom rom and it's being more painful than I expected.

The main reason I have to do this is because Sense is eating (almost) all my internal memory, so there's not enough space for my applications.
What I've done so far:
Rooted with unrevoked3. Everything seems to be Ok and I can see the superuser permissions icon.
Next thing I've tried is to install cyanogen with Rom Manager. It tries to flash to ClockworkMod Recovery 5 (the latest version) and it seems to do it fine, but I'm not sure of that. How can I check?
Anyway, when I try to backup my existing rom with Rom Manager I get an error, a very long one, and the last lines are:
ui_print("ROM Manager Version 4.5.0.1");
ui_print("12 October 2011");
backup_rom("/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/rm2011-10-12-20.56.43");

line 1: unexpected character at 'u'
Syntax error in update script

So no back up and I don't want to go on without a back up. Any recommendation on how to fix it, with or without rom manager?

The second thing is s-on. If I understand it right, being the memory size the main reason for the flash, I guess I should turn it off and partition the sd car. The questions are. Is there an easy/safe way to do that? Is it possible to turn it on again once the partitions are adjusted?

Thanks and sorry if the explanation is not very clear. I'm still trying to understand everything.

Have a look at our root sub forum here, particularly the "DO NOT use Rom manager" thread. Then read the rooting faq in my signature. Also the root memory faq

All your questions answered ;)

Thanks SUroot!!

I've already read your faq. Very good compilation!
So next step is uninstall rom manager and make a golden card.
Then nandroid back up and custom rom.

That's going to take longer than I expected, so I'll leave it for the weekend.

Thanks again! I'll let you know how it goes!
