Root New Root Problem for new user

Ok so when I flash to clockworkmod it seems to go alright, then I hit the reboot to recovery and nothing happens. Then I just do a normal reboot to recovery and hit the reload packets or whatever it is that some people say you have to hit the first time and it says theres no /update.zip. On top of that it seems like I dont have root access but I have super user privileges. Since programs like Ti backup get su privileges but then give me an error about not having root access or that busy box isnt working. Then I use the Ti backup's built in busy box updater thingy to no avail. So far I've tried 3 different ways to root; the one-click root, the normal update.zip that everyone downloads, and the update.zip that get rid of hardware lock at the same time (which I also needed apparently since I couldnt get to stock recovery). Its real funny because last night it rooted just fine, I backed everything up with Ti backup, then installed clockworkmod and backed everything up with that in the actual clockworkmod recovery prompt. What the heck is up with this?

Maybe you are copying the update.zip to the wrong folder? Make sure it is NOT in the external sd card ( the one with avatar). You want to copy it to the internal sd card. Also maybe try using a file manager on your PC (that worked for me when i was having problems rooting). For some reason I was getting that same error when I would just drag and drop the .zip over. I downloaded a file manager and it "magically" worked ;)

I never rename roms to update.zip and they work for me when I flash them. What rom are you trying to flash? Maybe the rom itself isnt rooted. I have a few custom roms on my dropbox you can use.

I'm trying to just get clockworkmod to work at this point. After I rooted I deleted the update.zip file like all the tutorials say. And then go to flash clockwork mod and that does its thing then I press reboot to recover and hit ok, then nothing happens, I've tried hitting it a bunch of times and still nothing.

Also When I do go about actually rooting its really fast, like 10 seconds and the progress bar doesnt go all the way across the top.

And I apparently dont have busy box and I cant get the one from the market to install, and the one from Ti update doesnt seem to take.

I have always kept my update.zip file, because way back when I first rooted, I tried to boot in to cwm recovery and it gave me the same error. I re-rooted, and left the update.zip in there, and have never had a problem since.

Well that didnt work, oh and I forgot to mention that the super users program from the normal update.zip doesnt work for me, it just gives a force close error. The superuser app from the one click root program does work though, or at least it doesnt crash.

Well that helps, still does the rooting at the recovery console only take like 10 seconds? Or is my phone not actually rooting? When I did the update that gets rid of hardware lock that took a couple of minutes and the progress bar actually went all the way across the screen, but when I root the progress bar doesnt move. I still need to find a busy box apk that works it would seem.

There is a busybox installer on the market place too actually as I found out the other day lol. When you go to install busybox in the app set it to install to the system directory thats in there and not voodoo or anything else.

How do you change the directory in the busy box installer? My only options in the app are, choose between versions (busybox 1.17.1 or 1.18.0 (unofficial)), and then install. Pressing the menu button yields nothing. Unless you found a different one than me, mines by stericson.

So I tried to follow that tutorial but everything but check free space is red on oclf so I assume that means I actually am already rooted. But clicking un-root says that its not rooted. And it asked for and I gave it super user permissions. Ugh. I just need to figure out how to use odin and put it back to the way it was before I went to be, when it was working fine. I didnt do anything overnight and now its all ****ed up. It seems like I'm half way rooted and no way to completely un-root or get it to fully root.

Finally said screw it and flashed back to bone stock with odin. Now waiting for TI backup to download so I can restore everything. Its going slow since I only get G at my house and not 3G.
