Help New Samsung Update & now I can't set up default apps

So I yesterday I got the new software update on my EPIC 4G & I'm totally bummed. I always liked using Handcent as my default messaging app & now I can set it. I don't know what's wrong. I've gone into apps>manage apps>messaging & the default button is grayed out. I can't select or unselect it. I've also tried the removal of notifications from the default app & enabling the one on handcent but that doesn't work either. Anyone else having this problem?
