New SD card and new ROM... help!

Desire rooted, running LeeDroid 2.1 something with A2SD+.

OK I have looked at a few other threads but I still have some questions.

I am finally upgrading my stock SD card to a 16GB card.

I know I need to format the new SD card before trying to use it in LeeDroid. I have Ubuntu installed on a laptop so I can format it from there. Can I then just copy all the contents from the old SD over to the new SD. What about the data in the ext3? Will this copy over too?

Once the new SD is installed I want to upgrade to the lastest version of LeeDroid. I've only installed one ROM (the one currently running) so I don't know how to back my phone up so it can be easily restored once the new ROM is running... I mean all the apps, personal data etc.

I have mybackup pro(paid) and titanium backup(free)... :)

just bought titanium backup pro...

by the looks of it I can backup everything.. flash any ROM I want and restore it all with titanium and it will completely restore the phone apps, data and user settings?

Titanium Back Up will do all the data saving stuff. With Linux, use your Disk Utility to format the card. If you never partitioned before, you'll need to unmount the partition, delete your existing partition, create an ext3 partition of around 500mb or so normally and then you can fill your data partition with the other available space. There is no need for swap space.

Personally, I would take a nandroid backup
Copy data to PC (hidden files too)
Insert new card, format and partition
Copy data to new card
Nandroid restore

Yes ROM manager can partition cards, but that won't be much use if you have an a2sd+ rom. You won't be able to boot up without the partition and you will need to boot to partition the SD. Catch22.
