Help New SGS2 - battery drained in 1 hour HELP

JohannesJ

Lurker
Hi!
I just recieved my S2 yesterday and it is, without a doubt, the best phone i've ever had!

Only problem is, when i went to school this morning (first day of use) i charged it over the night, so battery was at 100%. In the bus to school (30 mins) i listened to music and the phone got pretty hot but i didn't think it was anything. At school i got a popup saying my phone was under 40% battery!
I know that the battery gets better over time, but that can't be right - the only thing i was doing was just listening to music...
At school i used it moderately and even though i turned it off when i didn't need it i lasted for apx. 3 and a half hour.

HELP! I really don't want to turn this phone in! :/

Oh and one more thing - what is this rooting i hear everywhere? I've tried searching and there are lots of threads explaining how to do it, but no one explains what it is or why one should do it..
A quick introduction anyone? THANKS!

I know you have only had it for a day, but have you downloaded anything that could be running in the background? Launchers? Widgets??

I thought of that myself, but i have no widgets whatsoever, the only ones i have are those from factory: Clock, battery saving and notes.

Go into Settings>Applications>Running Services and see what services are running. Should be around 130-200MB of running apps.

Didn't know i could do that - i see wi-fi sharing and wi-fi sharing client on and i saw somewhere that it's a huge culprit. How do i turn this off permanently?
Email is running, Maps is running, Social hub is running and facebook, those are the ones which stand out to me.

Rooting your phone and using Titanium Backup to remove those Wi-Fi apps is the only way I know to get rid of them. (I did that the first day I had it.) Also removed the AP News app and Accuweather Widget App.

Could you give a quick introduction to rooting? Just what it is and why i should do it - i can allready find threads telling me how to :p

Thank you very much!
Does this affect updates or anything like that?
And on a sidenote, will i recieve icecream sandwich when it arrives?

If you root it, you probably won't get any updates. But, updates are easy enough to install on your own. :)

What version of Android is on your device?

Menu>Settings>About Phone

Sounds like something is keeping the phone from sleeping.
Check: Settings > About Phone > Battery Usage.

Post a screenshot of both that of what is using your battery, and if you touch the time ticker it will give you a screen of awake/screen on. Post that too. (Home Button + Lock Button for screenshot)

If wifi is the cause, pull down the notification bar and make sure its off. If having problem, look for the running app, force close it, then clear the RAM. Or just reboot the phone. Rebooting the phone usually clear up the issue. The wifi bug doesn't occur all the time for me. Same as voice command. But just have to pay attention to your battery once in awhile to check. Also I hear if use 2.3.4 updates, it gets solved.

Don't have to root to work around it.

Still on 2.3.3 tough as local SP still do not provide updates.

Nevertheless, how to do you actually permanently shut down voice command, maps and digital clocks as i always see them running in the processes even i never activated them before and also force close them but they keep appearing every minuite

Also, i see my running processes, what are SyncmIDS, google services, DRM Content, social hub and Task Manager? Can they closed as well.

The rest of the running services is fine as i always used them

If you want to permanently freeze apps, you need to be rooted unfortunately.

1) You can go to the apps themselves and force close it, then clear the RAM. If it starts up again, the only thing would be to try to reboot. Voice Command sometimes turn itself on with bluetooth. And when you press the home button twice. The real problem is actually it not shutting down properly. As for clock, I thinks its for your clock widget, but it shouldn't take up too much battery. Maps would appear with gps on sometimes but again shouldn't take too much battery.

2) The rest are standard. Social hub is where your push mail, messenger, etc. Task manager is just that. You access it when you go to the task manager.

3) I am assuming you are getting all this from BBS since it breaks down all those processes for you. Else its mostly grouped as Android OS I think. Anyway, try rebooting and see if the problem goes away.

Cheers

having wi-fi,bluetooth,GPS,... on, will surely drain ur battery exponentially faster!
just slide down the notification panel and turn them off;
turn them back on whenever u need them and back to off whenever ur done using them...

and make sure u have d screen locked (off) when ur not using the phone, don't wait it to automatically dim & turn off... it drains d batt. most...
try to have ur brightness at 60%ish wen ur indoors (if it doesn't bother u)

Just got drained 25% last night after 100% charged before my sleep.

To be exact 8H 58min on Idle with 3G and Wifi off and phone rebooted and rams cleared.

From the battery graph, during the sleep, the screen on balance against the awake (ie no awake during the screen off)

From BBS, i see from Partial Wakelocks since unplugged are:
Alarm Manager
BWL
RILJ
Activity Manager-Launch
PollService wakelockAcquire
*SYNC*
K9 Messenging Controller
Sleep Broadcast
Show Keyguard
Event Log Service
Network Location cell update
GmailProviderProvider-ChangedBroadcastWakelock

.......My question is with any for of Data (Wifi or 3G) these programs will automatically run on the phone even when the phone is off?

What can i do man..beside rooting of course :D

Can you pose a screenshot? Just press the home button, then the power at the same time.

But if the phone is asleep when the screen is also asleep, then I don't see how it can drain that much. Partial wakelogs always occur since it takes a little time to shutdown an app when screen is off and going to sleep. As long as its not abnormally long that practically keeps your phone from sleeping, its not a problem.

I read in another post that alarm keeps the phone from sleeping.

The gradual down slope was during the 8hrs+ with no wifi or 3G or on screen on.

The was a steep down slope after that which is ok, because i used the phone when i was awake.

Then started to charge again till full.

The concern is the slow downslope during the 8hrs.

Im sure its not the battery problem because i had 2x 1650mAh stock battery which is having the same concern.
This is the Original Samsung 2000mAh battery which i have been using for the past 2 week.

Ah..i sucks in posting pics...sorry..

Root has got nothing to do with official update.
As long as you are on stock ROM and kernel you can update via KIES,but you may loose root when the update is complete.
You can always re-root though.

Actually, it seems really good that the phone is generally asleep with the screen off. Its what you want. But the curve is a little steep for being idle. Anyone else have it like that?

Also, does both batteries give the same problem? Could stick with one battery and see if it improves.

Finally, see if you can get it back to the vendor to have a look? Maybe get a replacement. Worst case though. Because you might get other defects instead. I am guessing you don't have screen defect etc like others.

Good luck

To me, this appears to be a problem with the battery calibration file on the phone itself, rather than a battery issue (as you've tried different batteries).

Without rooting your device, I am unaware of any way to re-calibrate your phone's battery stats.

I had this problem when I first got my device and since I have rooted I can easily get 2 days+ with moderate use.

I have no idea about rooting but of course i could read it up if needed.
Just like iphone, i did jailbreak as well unless really necessary :D

Thks mate.

Yeah you can recalibrate phone without rooting. Its already in some threads.

Cheers

Calibrate phone and calibrate battery isit the same?
Would you be able to give me some keywords to search for this thread so that i could read it up how to do it.

If this issue continue to persist, i will need to switch back to fruity phone which i have been using for the past 3 years..but S2 is defientely way better than fruity phone but battery problem must be solved for me as i have too many business call :(

Sorry. Wasn't clear.

Meant recalibrating the battery without rooting. MA14NEY mentioned needing root to do it. Just pointing out you don't.

The only way to "Recalibrate" a phone is Factory reset so it totally goes back to original. Hehe.

As for battery problem, maybe you could upgrade to 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 since do not require root for that. Just use ODIN. I am not doing it right now since battery really enough for me. But good luck on solving your phone problem. It is better than originally right?

Other than that look at other tips for conserving battery and get a larger 2000mAh which Samsung has (officially) for the SGS2.

Cheers
