new sms from homescreen / keyboard type button missing

hello, just got my desire today and been googeling to figure out several things but im stumped with the following:

blank sms via one button:
is there a way to just access the new sms / text message 'screen' from a button on my homescreen? rather that having to go messages>new?
i realise its only a extra button press but i read that someone managed to get this to work (rather like the wifi on off widget button).

keyboard type selection replaced with mic:
when using sms instead of the manual identified keyboard change key i have a microphone which takes me to text to speech, while this is a nifty feature as im getting used to my desire i would find it easier to be a able to switch between phone keypad / qwerty keypad as and when from here. how do i fix this button? all googles results in people wanting to add text to speech not fix the button to behave like it is supposed to.

i have updated the software via the check for updates option and installed ES file explorer via market (as i couldn't figure out a way to view the sd contents).

i have several other new user questions such as a separate folder for joke / quotes sms / saved sms's. Tips for transferring calendar data and sms / mms's from my nokia but i believe it is best to put these into separate posts after an extensive search, correct?

As far as getting to the new sms screen sometimes you have to hit the back button. Most times if I click on the text app it takes me to the last text I was in. And for the keyboard selection you just have to go to menu, settings, language and locale, then in there you can choose. There's no way to do this from the keyboard unfortunately

Thanks, awh so there's no way to remove this voice / mic button, was this changed/ added in an update?
i ask as the manual and many of the references i found were older but only showed the choose keyboard button in its place and i can only assume that an update changed this?
