what is the first thing i should do.. is there program updates i should do first.. software updates.. like sense ui updates that may not have been factory installed??

What about android.. is there updates for that..

How do i know what OS i am on?? SenseUI 1.5.x Android 1.5.x

is there a quick easy way for me to do updates.. check phone for updates.. i just seen a handcent update.. but only cuz i stumbled upon it..

I have read about rooting my phone.. but i am not techy enough to really know how to do that..

i read of the kitchen rooting..

I came from the pre, where they had WebOS quick install, which made life much easier..

Thanks for the patience with a noob...

the prekitchen rooting is the best way to go to root your phone...

don't need to be tech savvy in order to use it...

man.. i been readin and readin.. and i just dont get it.. what does rooting do.. everyone talks about how much faster the phone is.. and how it gets rid of the laggyness.. which i would be interested in.. just too worried bout messing something up..

"rooting" is a Linux term. In Linux, the default admin account is the root account and regular user accounts aren't given full admin rights. Basically, rooting gives you the ability to use the root account to modify your phone in ways not normally possible.

In Windows terms
Stock Android = limited user account
Rooted Android = Admin account

Do I need an SD card to root? Should I wait until I get one? I jsut got my phone 30 mins ago, this thing is sweet :P

I did that lol :)

I don't see any special instructions for the pre-kitchen. I know I've read it's pretty self expanitory, just checking.

thanks for the info.. i just checked out the unlockr page.. and saw the vid on how to root.. looks easy.. i am fixin to watch how to flash the phone.. and make a recovery image.. gonna check that out.. does it show on there how to load the actual roms, or whatever.. fresh 1.1 and such.. i will do a search..

thanks agian.. can someone tell me the pros and cons of rooting? better performance? do i really need to root?

I don't mean to thread jack but we're both new so I'll ask in here too :P I enabled USB debugging but I'm still getting device not found. Where do I get drivers to install when I enable that, since the new hardware wizard pops up?

htc sync should be on your sd card (out the box mine did) if not go to htc website and get sync it will include the drivers

- Download Pre-Kitchen .2
- Download the .2 Auto-Root fix (just copy the .exe into the Pre-Kitchen directory)
- Launch Pre-Kitchen and click the Question mark and run the diagnostic test
- Click the # symbol to run the auto-rooter...check the "With Google" box if you have a phone that says "With Google" on the back. After you root with the box checked, you can run it again without the box checked to update to 1.5.2.

Now that you're rooted...create a backup image before you do anything else!

Now you can copy the CDMA Fresh 1.1 zip to your SD card and flash it from the recovery console.

Run the test a few times...and don't click anywhere. Mine failed a few times...then finally passed. Not sure whats up with it.
