New Symbol - help please

Hi,
I hope somebody can help me. On the top bar of my htc desiree I have got a symbol that i've only ever seen when using the maps its a white speaker type signal with 2 flashing green lights. I don't know what it means and I'm not currently using the navigation thing. Can anybody tell me what it is and how to get rid of it

Thankyou so much

Are you sure you don't have some other app with GPS access (guessing it's the GPS icon if it usually appears with Maps)? Could be something as simple as a browser with permission to use your location (I've had to turn that off before now). Have you used Navigation recently, since in my limited experience with it it likes to stay live in the background?

You could see what apps you currently have running and try killing some and see if it goes away.

You can simply turn GPS off via the "Location and Security" menu. If you do this though, you'll also have to manually turn it on in the same way when you next want to use GPS.

So it might be more convenient to find out which app is using it (GPS should only be active when an app is using it). You may have some app that makes this simpler, but you can always go to the Applications menu, Manage Applications, select Running. Look at what's running, and try to guess what might be using GPS (could be anything that might use location). You can select apps from the list and "force close" them - if the GPS icon disappears when you close an app, then you know which one was responsible.

If all else fails, there's always the reboot option :)
