Help New TB won't sync to Google "sync is experiencing problems"

My wife's TB won't sync with her Google account. I keep getting this error that "sync is experiencing problems, please try again later". I have tried a factory reset and the solutions pasted below. The first solution won't work because this is the main account on the phone, and you can't delete it. That's why I opted for the factory reset. This account was syncing just fine with her Droid X that we just returned, so I don't know what would be different about the new phone.

1) Settings > Accounts & Sync > Deselect the Auto-sync checkbox
2) Delete the account that is not syncing (Facebook, Google, etc...)
3) Hold down the power button to reboot the phone.
4) Upon reboot, go to Settings > Accounts & Sync > add the account information again (that you deleted in step 2)
5) Select the Auto-sync checkbox
6) The device will resync your account settings and contact information.

Go to "Settings". Select "Applications".
Select "Manage Applications".
Scroll down to "Contacts Storage"
Click on "Clear Data"

Go back to to "Settings" again and in "Data Synchronization"
resync by pressing "Synchronize Now"

Can you log into Google Talk? For some reason an inability to connect to GTalk also is a signal that other services may have issues.

I just synced her contacts to another google account and it synced up fine. It worked to get the contacts on the phone, but that's not the account she needs to sync with. So, it's a temporary fix. I guess I will have to put up a post over in the google support forum to see if there is anything we can do.

i'm having this same problem.. my contacts haven't been able to sync since the 17th, and i'm not sure what's going on or how to fix/troubleshoot without doing a factory reset. any help is appreciated.

I did do a factory reset, it didn't help at all.
