Newbie
I currently have a iPhone 3Gs and of course am on AT&T. I will be able to upgrade in May of 11', and want to get the Captivate.
Can those who have it tell me what I am in for? I know it's a different ballgame than the iphone, but i'd like to know how different it is! I am having a hard time waiting til' May, i'm very excited!
Thanks for any info!

First, welcome!

In summary, it's a good device that has three major weaknesses.

1. Inconsistent GPS service. Acceptable for some users, not acceptable for others.
2. Random shutdowns. Not universal.
3. Operational lags.

Before May of 2011 the next OS iteration (Froyo) should be in place. How it will affect the above-listed items is unknown. You have plenty of time to monitor the evolution of the Captivate.

I'd suggest going to http://www.capfaq.com to see replies to frequently asked questions and, of course, you can keep an eye on this forum's posts for varied bits of helpful (and not so helpful) information.

Don't touch the OTA update. I JUST got my Captivate today (rather yesterday, but whatever) and it completely bricked my phone. hooray.

Bricked phone - CapFAQ

If the phone is truly bricked after you attempt what's recommended in the link you can exchange it. A failed OTA update is reason enough.

Heh thanks, been lurking around for a bit, first android phone... switching over from a N900.

But yeah, I've tried all of that, everything in an xda developer's forum thread, and such. It kind of sucks seeing as I've had the phone for less than 30 minutes and it bricked. Already contacted samsung about an exchange though.

I had a Captivate and I didn't have a ton of issues with it but the battery was horrible. It's a good device but if you're upgrading in May I wouldn't get it. Instead I would look at the Motorola Olympus. It should come with Gingerbread and it'll have a Tegra 2 processor.

5 months is a very long time in this Cell phone industry. The captivate may or may not be the best Android phone offered by AT&T. Like others said, I'd suggest you wait to see what else AT&T offers.

@OP

If u r due in May 11, then forget captivate. ATT will come up with new powerful phones with Dual core processors. Motorola Olympus or something like is rumored to come out in first quarter. It seems to be most powerful phone with dual core..so wait and watch,,,,

Also as verizon is getting iphone, ATT has to come up with better android line up...so wait and watch.

Thanks for the reply's! I am now moving towards the Motorola Olympus based on the advice here. I really hope that it trully does come with all the bells and whistles that the rumors are saying! I am sooo looking forward to a larger screen and a faster processer and HDMI!

I thank God that I don't have any of those issues!!

You can get your phone bricked by OTA update?!! I thought bricking only occurs when you root? I have an unlocked AT&T captivate currently used on the Rogers network in canada and I don't have the original receipts or warrenties....Now I'm hesitant to update OTA when 2.2 does come out.
How can the service providers allow this? This means that everytime an OS update comes OTA, they'll be forcing some people to get new phones if they arent under any warrenties. Thats BS

"Bricking" can happen anytime something goes wrong while critical system files are being written. So yes, you can get bricked by a failed OTA update, although there are things in-place to try and reduce the chance of this happening.
