I recently acquired my a500 from a friend who impulse buys but has no use for stuff usually, great friend to have coz I always get stuff on the cheap :)

Anyway, I'm getting the I cs update notification & really want to try it BUT being new to android I have a question or 2.

Are there any steps I should take before updating?

I.e. backup etc

Will my apps still work?

Will my setup remain the same?

I have customised shortcuts, folder shortcuts etc i.e. games, internet, system, utilities etc

I like the thought of ics but like to be prepared as well.

P.S. not rooted, just stock :)

Thanks for any advice fella's (ladies too if there are any)

Hello and welcome to the forums - thanks for joining!

 You're right... that does sound like a good friend to have ;)

I have no experience with OTA updates I'm afraid, as I rooted both my phone and my tablet pretty much as soon as I got them.

I am not sure how much you can back up without having rooted your tablet either.

You shouldn't loose any data and your apps should still work (as ICS has been coming for a long time and most app devs have been working hard to get their apps ready for it).

With regards to your shortcuts, you may have to set them up again, as the launcher would likely change (you may want to get advice from other A500 users though... as I said, I've never had an OTA update).

The only time that an update could cause a real issue is if you have rooted it and try to accept an OTA update on top of the custom ROM.

Okay I've come back to relate my experience so far, please bare in mind that these are my opinions & experience so far, will update as I play more.

17:14 (UK time): Started update download process
17:28: Download complete (via wifi, so may be faster/slower for others)
17:29: Update started
17:46: All done (240 apps so again this may differ)

17:48: Tried to come here to post above times, experience so far NOT GOOD.
18:10: Finally got here & started posting.

Tried getting here (twice) from email link to start with, email took a lot longer to load than before update & crashed both times.

Browser, again took longer to load than before but finally got here at 18:10.

Aesthetically pleasing but reserving judgement for the moment, requires further testing.

Though typing seems to be a lot smoother so far.

Will update as I go good & bad, not seen this ics circle/app thing yet, home screen looks same, lock screen (pattern lock) slightly changed but nothing major (kinda o instead of O).

Going to try my daily stuff out now.

Well its been over a day & my experience has worsened!

Overall my apps take longer to load, I'm getting freeze ups & crashes constantly, have to say I'm not happy.

I've had the tablet just over a month & was quite taken with it, yes it had some issues (kinda hoped ics would take care of some of them) but now I'm thing (dare I say) iPad.

Is there any way of rolling back?

Will start a new thread on that subject I think.

Hi, we have an A500, new out of box, can turn it on, play the game but nothing else. what do we need to do to "root" it. What is "rooting"?

Have a look at this thread - http://androidforums.com/iconia-tab...hings-root-guide-updated-22-april-2012-a.html - it explains all abuot Root/Rooting.

We have telstra phones, bigpond on a laptop. Cant seen to bluetooth or wifi the 500.

Help us set it up, please.

kempac:):)

Not sure what you want to do... do you mean you want to connect your A500 to your laptop?
