Root New to android modding please help

I'll be picking up my samsung epic in couple days and i wanna root it from what i can tell iv been a modder of all things psp's wii's ps2's but im reading all this and its making no since. I know rooting allows me to do things i couldn't orriginally its basically developer mode. But now is when i get lost whats the clockworkmods? i see its needed for some stuff and how can i change the boot of my phone? Also if i root does it void my warranty i mean if i unroot how would they ever know?
Can someone lie the foundation for me tell me what i need to know and give me the basic materials i don't wanna use an outdated guide and mess up my phone

Oh i guess i forgot two questions is there a way to fix my phone if i brick it? i know the psp has permanent bricks and partial bricks. And the other is do i have to be un rooted to update my phone?

QFT! Cows...read and read some more. If you're familiar with this game, you shouldn't have a tough time picking it up.

Sure, there's always a chance you can brick your phone, but I've only seen one person perma-brick their Epic so far and that was because they tried putting a GSM version of Gingerbread on a CDMA phone. That will NOT work well. Outside that, I haven't seen anyone under normal circumstances brick their phone beyond repair.
