New To Android - Suggestions?

I purchased a Samsung Charge earlier today from a Verizon Authorized Reseller. Negotiated $144.99 for the phone, plus a $35 activation fee I was told would be on my bill. Prior to this I was an AT&T iPhone 4 user.

I'd love to hear about suggested apps to make this phone rock. As well, do you think it makes sense to root at this time? What are the added benefits?

Thanks!

Neil

neil, welcome to the Android Family, and welcome to the best phone VZW has to offer on 4G/LTE at present. I think if you are not going to root the phone, the best addition you can do is add an alternate launcher. Go to Android Market, get:
Home Switcher for Froyo (Allows you to quickly decide which Launcher to use)
Launcher Pro
GO Launcher
ADW
Try them all decide what one you like better, it is more snappier than the Touch Wiz 3.0. When you decide, buy the one and get all the features unlocked. I prefer Launcher Pro. Many like GO Launcher.

Get: Beautiful Widgets, Battery Status, Dolphin HD Browser, SkyFire Browser (They are snappier than the stock kit browser), Chrome to phone, dropbox, Tango (For Video Chat), Phandroid (So you can see these posts), Zedge (Allows you to pick free custom ringtones and SMS tones), Vlingo (For great voice to text writing)Tune Wiki, great music player, and Google Music. Just a few to start with that are great. Avoid Task Killers and Lookout Virus protection programs they really hurt the speed and snap to your system. Hope this is a good start for you, again WELCOME!

Awesome post! If you are used to using an iPhone 4 you may be a bit annoyed by the size of the spacebar and accidentally hit a "." in between most words. I use Smart Keyboard Pro (there's also a free version to test) which allows me to have a larger keyboard. There's also an iPhone theme. This was honestly the hardest part about going from iPhone to Android for me (SUUPER happy outside of that).

In addition to those three launchers specified above you can also try SPB Shell 3D. It's really cool looking and always get a "WOW" reaction. Unfortunately it doesn't have as many of the features of other launchers and it's like $15.

Welcome to the Android family!

Oh, SICK price you paid! As a point of how good of a deal you got; I got mine for $260 and that's employee discount...
