Root New to Android

Hi, I just purchased my first Android phone which is a previously owned, unlocked Desire Z which I am using on Rogers.

The phone is in very good condition and everything was going well until I tried to install an OTA update which gave me a screen with an exclamation sign beside the android robot.

The ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 screen came up and says something about failed to verify whole-file signature.

Does this mean that this phone has been rooted and that is why the update failed? Am I able to undo this and return to the original rom? If so will this re-lock my phone to Bell?

Thanks in advance.

Your phone is most certainly rooted, if it has Clockworkmod Recovery on it.

However, this is, if fixable, a very good thing, as it's preowned anyway, and rooting the Desire Z was a bit of a hassle for me, after the ease of my Desire.

I recommend downloading a custom ROM, (Cyanogen, etc) putting the .zip on your MicroSD card and then flashing it through Clockworkmod... which should help you out. I can't be sure though, as I've never tried to flash an OTA after rooting, it's like, a mortal sin, haha.

Just to add to what Tommex said....

Official OTA updates won't install if the stock recovery image has been replaced, which is what ClockworkMod has done. This isn't a bad thing, as (a) CWM has much more functionality and (b) OTAs often introduce their own "features". ;)

I'd recommend updating to the latest version of CWM (3.0.2.4) by installing ROM Manager from the Market. As far as ROMs go, if you're a fan of Sense then the Virtuous ROM should be right up your street; it's basically the stock HTC ROM on steriods. :) I also highly recommend CyanogenMod 7 if you fancy trying out Android 2.3.
