Root New to root and I have a rom question

I just rooted least night so please be patient with a root newb.

If I download a rom from somewhere like xda does that rom come with everything needed like the kernel and radios and all that or ste they separate? If they are separate can I just change the rom and leave everything else the way it is?

What I'm wanting is a new theme or look, maybe a new dockbar. Stuff like that.

If you download a ROM, the developer will already have his kernel of choice in there. Usually they list what kernel they are using in the first post. So you can just load it up and you are ready to go.....

After that you can load different kernels based on your needs and wants as they all act differently. You can swap kernels without wiping all of you data. You just need to clear cache and dalvik and load the new kernel. It is as simple as that.

For a different dockbar, Launcher Pro allows you to switch out the dockbar. If you look in there forums, people have many so many cool docks that you can use.
