Root New to root

Hey guys I've had my Ally since August 2010 and have recently become interested in rooting it. I have no idea how to root or what exactly it does, so I'm looking for some answers. The closest thing I've done to this is installing Rockbox on my sansa e260 a couple years ago if anyone knows what that is. I'm just curious if there are any huge advantages to rooting? I also do not want to brick my device at all. I am getting the droid 4 whenever it comes out, but until then if I brick my Ally I would be s.o.l. I also have some programming experience if that helps at all. Thanks for your help guys!

Ill give this a shot since i know i will be corrected later... rooting in essence give you the ability to manipulate your device. Rooting allows you to not only be a user, but also an administrator of your device.

After root you will have the ability to delete the bloatware or "cellular service provider" apps from the phone which will allow for more useful apps in the individuals eyes... or even change the rom on the phone. For refernce, google cyanogen, liberty, or velocity...

But because of the administrative access, there is a chance that your phone could brick if the wrong thing has been changed to the wrong interval but that is always why you make a nandroid backup...
